They only left the temple alive because he had been a virtue. If Burning Spice had been sitting there, he would have immolated them within seconds of the leader opening their mouth.

Perhaps this was the newest version of that organization? If so, why hadn't they attempted to take him? He, too, was a Beast. The chaos of the Spice Festival would have been the perfect camoflage, too.
