Privacy Settings

So for this module I decided to talk about the privacy settings of Facebook. Facebook is an awesome platform to use to keep in contact with distant relatives and friends, plan events, be part of groups for school, and so on. It’s easy to be on it and completely forget about privacy because it is a platform to post about your life. This becomes an issue because you can get taken advantage of by people. They can collect enough data on you to use whether for marketing reasons or unorthodox reasons. The first thing to do is make sure only your friends can see your posts. You don’t want everyone in the whole wide world to know what is happening in your life, especially if some things might affect your chances of obtaining a job or how others see you. Now let’s not forget the creeps and predators. I’ve gotten a handful of messages from random guys who saw me in their dreams and wanted to marry me. This why the information in the previous section is extremely important. It is highly dangerous when the target of these people are young people who are at a vulnerable stage. Thankfully Facebook has a blocking section in their privacy settings, where you can block individual people who won’t stop messaging you thus not being able to see anything about you. The most simple thing someone can do when using Facebook is being smart about what they post online because everything stays on the Internet and the world can see everything is they knew where to look.

USING AN RSS FEED!

It took a while to get used to, but after I had figured it out, Feedly grew on me. While using the site, I came across a few features that are unique to RSS feeds, which are also quite beneficial.

The first thing I noticed while using an RSS feed was that it asked you to follow a few different blogs that you were interested in. What I like about this is the full control the user has over their feed, unlike Twitter or Facebook where you can’t as easily filter what shows up on your home page. This makes browsing a lot faster, as well as more enjoyable because you’re guaranteed to be interested in what you see.

Another thing I really liked about using Feedly was the fact that you can actually select twitter accounts you’re interested in, and it will track their tweets for you. This is really useful because often times, we miss tweets from accounts due to time differences or an over-populated Twitter feed.

The two benefits I discussed are benefits strictly to the user of an RSS feed, but I also noticed a few features of Feedly that might be useful to any business trying to promote their brand/products on the site. These include the fact that it is much cheaper to use an RSS feed to promote your products, and also the convenience of reaching a much bigger audience for cheaper, through syndication.

For the reasons I explained, using an RSS feed is beneficial to both the readers and the writers of these blog posts. I could see myself using my Feedly app frequently, to stay directly in touch with topics of my interest.

Recipe for Reputability

Since we were young, we’ve been warned of the dangers of social media, and the impact it can have on your reputation. Although we have all likely heard this hundreds of times, it holds true that social media is not something to be taken lightly. Whether it be future employers, family, or friends, everyone can view your posts, and that is why it’s important that everyone has an understanding of what is appropriate for social media, and what is not. Below are 5 basic rules of proper online etiquette.

The first most important thing to do before sharing anything online is ask yourself “am I okay with my mother seeing this post?” Remembering that social media is never private can save you a lot of embarrassment down the road.

Second, it is important to make sure that posts are well thought out, rather than reactive, to ensure we don’t say something that we don’t necessarily mean. Often when we feel sad or angry, we turn to social media to express our emotions. This is dangerous because we don’t want to end up taking advantage of the network and using it as an emotional dumping ground!

Another thing to keep in mind when using social media is that much like starting a company, we need to take ownership of our brand. Decide what it is you want to be known for, and do everything necessary to protect that image.

Just like in the real world, it is important to respect people online and refrain from posting anything offensive. With the anonymity of the digital world, it is now much easier to say things you wouldn’t normally say to someone if you were face-to-face with them. Being disrespectful even once online can always come back to bite you.

Lastly, proper spelling and grammar always goes a long way. In order to gain credibility, make sure posts are well thought-out (not vague), and can be easily understood.

These are the important rules of social media, which can go a long way in helping you build your online identity.

Here is my proposal for the final EID 100 project. After consulting for a while my partner, Alexa Jovanovic, and I decided our topic would be Privacy and Security in Social Media. We felt this best applied to our target audience, and would also interest the both of us.
