Codecademy
Codecademy is an easy to use website to learn how code. It explains why each aspect of the of the code is important. One thing I will point out though is that when you make mistakes it doesn’t clarify why the information you inputed was incorrect...if that makes sense. Code is difficult to understand, it is another language.
Personally for me, I dislike like coding...a lot. So yes I learned something but I currently don’t have the time and patience to commit to it, but that isn’t to say that I will never touch it ever again. I will but probably when I have more time (not now with project galore).
Duolingo
Duolingo is an easy app that can help you learn a language. While it is good and simple to use, there have been negative reviews, mostly from native speakers. Their complaints are that Duolingo is missing some key information regarding each language. I’m not quite sure exactly what but from what I know from the period I used it I understand.
I briefly used it to learn Korean (that didn’t last long though due to my inability to focus on one thing without getting bored). Duolingo went straight into basic words and basic sentences. Personally I think this is not the right way to start a language: I would start with the alphabet and their pronunciation (also information on dialects because I have heard different pronunciation of some words), the rules (how they can be placed together in order to make a word, which one is the vowel, which one is the consonant, etc), “rules” how to order them in a sentence, and grammar. For me, those are important things to consider because I want to understand the language, whereas going write into words and sentences without a intro seems rushed.
The app I’m currently am using to learn the Korean alphabet is “PopPopping Korean”, which is extremely helpful but it’s only for people to learn the pronunciation of each letter and the rules of creating a word.
Community of Knowledge
Feedly
At the beginning of setting Feedly up, I was a little doubtful on whether it would be useful for me. After spending time on the site and going through the features, I realized how much time I don’t waste browsing the sites, all the articles are there. This makes it easier and less overwhelming to browse through. It makes it easier to read everything that was uploaded recently from your favourite sites all in one location.
Privacy Settings
So for this module I decided to talk about the privacy settings of Facebook. Facebook is an awesome platform to use to keep in contact with distant relatives and friends, plan events, be part of groups for school, and so on. It’s easy to be on it and completely forget about privacy because it is a platform to post about your life. This becomes an issue because you can get taken advantage of by people. They can collect enough data on you to use whether for marketing reasons or unorthodox reasons. The first thing to do is make sure only your friends can see your posts. You don’t want everyone in the whole wide world to know what is happening in your life, especially if some things might affect your chances of obtaining a job or how others see you. Now let’s not forget the creeps and predators. I’ve gotten a handful of messages from random guys who saw me in their dreams and wanted to marry me. This why the information in the previous section is extremely important. It is highly dangerous when the target of these people are young people who are at a vulnerable stage. Thankfully Facebook has a blocking section in their privacy settings, where you can block individual people who won’t stop messaging you thus not being able to see anything about you. The most simple thing someone can do when using Facebook is being smart about what they post online because everything stays on the Internet and the world can see everything is they knew where to look.
The Cloud
The cloud or the network cloud can be a semi-public or public place that is on transmission lines which is found in between the ends of a transmission. Data enters the network from point A utilizing a normal protocol suite and will end up in the cloud among other data. It can then be used in many ways but the format will remain the same as it had in the beginning.
We have a cloud due to the fact that each set of data will usually take different routes to get there. Where ever the data goes before it is received is the cloud.
One example is the Google Drive. It is a service that allows people to save and share documents, files, presentations, etc. Users will also be able to retrieve them from any computer through their Google account.
Netiquette
Netiquette : the correct or acceptable way of communicating on the internet.
Netiquette is the simple word that describes how we should act and behave on the web, whether it’s social media or regarding business. It is a simple, self-explanatory set of rules that are supposed to help us create a presence online that is appropriate and acceptable. Netiquette rules consist of what should be common sense: don’t say anything that can hurt someone (like “nobody wants you...”), don’t say something that you wouldn’t say in person (for example hate mail), make sure how you act online is the same way you act in the real world, and so on.
However, seemingly, these rules have been disregarded almost completely. There are so many examples I can give you like spam mail, harassing people online, sending hate mail, sending death threats, ruining peoples life just because you can, etc.
Example: http://thinkprogress.org/culture/2015/12/11/3731065/hey-justin-bieber-asking-your-48-million-followers-to-find-an-underage-girl-on-instagram-is-not-romantic/?utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=webfeeds
So netiquette is very important because it shows a side of us to the world that we want to be proud of, that will help us get jobs, that will have people respect us, but sadly that is not the case.
Digital Media
Digital Media is very broad and extremely versatile. Content is always being uploaded online. People use the media as a source of entertainment, a way to promote their work (writing, art, research, audio, etc), connect with people (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram...), and more. Digital media can also become art. Some artists are known to take data found online and creating beautiful infographics or they use a notion that is familiar and changing it in a way that it makes you see it in a whole new light. The possibilities are endless when it comes to digital media.
Why didn't I feel remorse for them, like I did at the beginning?
So my final project consists a projection of three trees and physical paper hearts with stories written on them. Each tree represents a significant theme that the stories fall under. This is far from what I had planned at the beginning but I like how it turned out. It's really simple looking but it still looks visually good whereas my first idea was really busy looking even if it looked cool. I'm happy with the result and the reactions. There are many things to consider now, after hearing all the comments, to improve this project. I'm on the right path but there are still aspects that can be made better so that will be the areas where I focus on.
This is a portrait of me, created with quotes that I have related to over time. Quotes are a huge part of me because they uplift my mood for the time being. They give me the push to change my negative, self-degrading thoughts to more positive, reinforcing thoughts that will, hopefully, make me more confident in a way. I chose quotes because they sooth me in the way all the books I have read, have done when I was younger and I was going through a tsunami of emotions slash thoughts that were drowning me. Words are powerful, they can make you or break you, they are cruel or kind, fake or genuine. Sometimes it’s hard to understand them, or you just do not care enough to accept them. Which is so frustrating depending on who you are talking to. Quotes are lines that resonates with us: our grandparents said something that made us feel something, a quote, someone famous who we have respect for says something that makes us go, “they on to something there”. So the portrait consists of quotes but there is no difference between the two sections, only that one part is the hair and the other my face slash neck.
Story Hub
Em was living a nightmare. Her mind was a mess, there were too many problems and demands to overcome. She had a therapist but it seemed like it wasn't helping so she decides to go to her blog to see if there was anyone else on who could try to help her. After posting a well thought out paragraph on her troubles, an anonymous reader replies with words that comforted to her. It seemed like the person on the other side understood where she was coming from. At her next appointment, she tells her therapist about the incident, recalling the feeling of comfort hearing from someone who understood. The therapist was glad to hear and encouraged Em to continue but to be careful. They end the session, agreeing to have another appointment on her progress, and head home. The therapist drives home, with Em on her mind, thinking how similar Em was to her own son. Once getting home, she walks past him on the way to the kitchen, bringing Em back into her mind. He was on the computer as all teens are. What she and Em didn't know was that it was actually him who sent the anon message. They probably will never know for awhile.
