Tweetdeck
For module five, we had to download Tweetdeck to our computers, an application connected to your twitter that allows tweets and accounts to be sorted. For The purposes of the assignment, I chose two areas of interest to me, could computing and my major, interior design.
Three characteristics of this application that stood out were:
1. You can specify where the information is coming from. By setting up a “list” column, you can refine the timeline to specific users. For example, when I set up my interior design column I only selected twitter accounts like @InteriorDesign, making a group of related blogs on a separate feed than the rest.
2. Tweetdeck allows users to specify what tweets are displayed in the columns by choosing filters which can find tweets containing certain words or by specific accounts, there’s the option to be shown no retweets or even the what type of tweets – links, videos, pics, etc.
3. The application provides you with a constantly refreshed news feed. The columns update in real-time, meaning you’re getting all the information you want and need hot off the press.
These three things make Tweetdeck different from search engines like Google by providing a very refined, tailored to you – as well as by you – source of information. This puts the power in your hands, allowing you to make tweaks to the information you get, unlike Google, where an algorithm is used to find everything related to your keywords.
(Internet) Cookies and (Third) Parties.. Not as great as they used to be.
Many people kill time today surfing the web, a vast majorityof them don’t really understand that what they are doing on the web is shared with not only the sites they are intentionally visiting, but also is accessible to a great number of third party sites as well.
After downloading Lightbeam for Firefox – an extension which basically gives you a visual representation of your web activity – I surfed the web for a mere twenty minutes, visiting only five sites… at least only five first party sites.
I spent my twenty minutes checking my (1) Yahoo emails and (2) Facebook messages while listening to music on (3) YouTube, then visiting a discovery engine called (4) StumbleUpon which introduces users to webpages they might be interested in from where I discovered an interesting article – discussing the possibility that people can force love to happen – which I read further about on the (5) New York Times website.
What I didn’t realize was that through visiting these five sites I would also connect with a total of 187 third party sites which were tracking my browsing. This is what my graph looked like....
These third party sites attach cookies to the browser to basically make a personal profile for you, categorizing you into a segment with pinpoints who you are.
Okay, not quite that specific, but you get the point.
The sites do this for a variety of reasons but the most predominant is to tailor the ads that you see and how best to market to you.
Although these sites and their cookies aren’t necessarily harmful, it’s important to think about ways you can protect your personal information when surfing the web.
Here are a few simple ways to navigate the internet in the safest way possible:
1. Surf with either chrome or Firefox browsers. They have the best security in comparison with other options.
2. Install extensions like AdBlock for chrome to limit the pop ups which can access viruses.
3. Never open emails you don’t recognize.
4. Search with engines like “DuckDuckGo”.
5. Surf in Incognito tabs, these tabs delete history and cookies after the browser session is over.

TEN STEPS TO MASTERING GOOGLE SEARCH
1. How can you search for an exact word or phrase?
Put quotation marks around the word or phrase.
2. How can you search for something on a specific site?
To specify the site google will find results from type site: followed by the site without a space.
3. How can you correctly search for a definition?
Type define: followed by the word you wish to define without a space, to get a definition.
4. How can you search for a specific product available within a specific price range?
In order to specify a prince range, name the product followed by the lower price, ellipses, and the higher price. It should look like this: PS4 $300…$400
5. How can you search for a specific file type?
If you’re looking for a specific file type, simply type filetype: followed by the kind of file you want, again, make sure there are no spaces.
6. How can you include or ignore words in your search?
To include a word in your search, place quotation marks around it. Like so: Rangers “New York”.
To exclude words from your search, precede the word you want to exclude with a minus sign ‘-‘. An example of this would be spider –man.
7. How can you find sites/pages similar to an existing one?
Type related: followed by the name of the existing site.
8. How can you confirm the exact form of a quote even if you were missing some of the words?
Replace every unknown word with an asterisk “*”. For example, “Not all those who * are lost.”
9. How can you search for pages containing two connected words?
Connect the two related words with a dash “-“.
10. How can you search for social media content containing a specific tag?
To search social media content you can use a hashtag “#” or at symbol “@” before the tag you are looking for.
DIGITAL ETIQUETTE
In today’s society our online presence says a lot about us. We put our lives on display for friends and family as well as employers and complete strangers. Because of this, every status, picture and comment we share shapes our identity to the public. Digital etiquette is fundamental to our online presence when using social media platforms.
A few things to consider:
1. Keep it professional Employers often search the name of potential employees to see what they are sharing. This gives the employer a better understanding of the person they are potentially hiring. Remember to check for proper English, keep it respectful and try to steer clear from sarcasm and other things that can be misinterpreted over social media.
2. Avoid passive aggressiveness
When you have a problem with someone, avoid discussing it over social media. Sharing personal rants over these platforms gives the impression of a petty and rude personality.
3. Remember that once you hit send it’s there forever
Although you can remove a post from your wall and delete an email from your inbox it doesn't mean it’s gone. So always read posts over before hitting send. Make sure you’re okay with everyone from your Grandmother to your boss reading it.
4. Don’t over share
Believe it or not, not everyone wants to know about how drunk you are on a Tuesday night. So keep it to yourself and avoid the embarrassment.
