Eighth Week

This week I continued work on the promo video! For the previous videos, I had tried to showcase a sense of vibrancy through the music by choosing techno upbeat tunes. However, the promo really flexes my creative muscles since I was in charge of every aspect of production; thus, I wanted to experiment as much as I could. For example, I wanted to see what else I could do in terms of editing the footage together in unique way. I remembered that I saw a key frame option; thus, I concluded that I could animate on Final Cut Pro—perhaps not with the sophistication of Adobe After Effects but I could at least move footage around on screen. To test this idea, I took three interview segments and cropped the footage so that only the interviewees ‘faces remained. After placing one footage on top of the other in the timeline, I placed key frames at the beginning of their rotations to the end of their rotations. Once that was completed, I essentially had three faces moving up and down on screen. While I am glad I tried this idea for a more fun and kooky intro, I ultimately decided against using that idea because, in my mind, it didn’t meld with the style I saw in the Chrysler’s own videos. Many of the videos on the channel have simple and clean edits that sync to the music, which is often electronic. The edits I am slowly settling upon for the promo video follow that trend. I am not animating footage across other clips, rather I am trying to create a piece that flows with minimal alterations to the footage itself. The alterations I do make are to the sound and the formatting. The latter change is based on the fact that, when I am working with optimized media, frames are dropped. The video is in a 4k format and I changed it to a 2k format to address slow playback issues. However, this solution minimized my clips in the viewing screen, requiring that I transform each clip and expand it so that it filled the screen.

 Also, this week we had meetings with the education and registrar department. I really enjoyed these meetings for their honesty. The education department gave invaluable advice on what mentality to have entering the work force, and their personal stories concerning their path to the museum was inspiring and calmed my nerves about adulthood. The registrar department also helped in that regard. Besides the advice they gave, I especially liked it when the took us to art storage. It was amazing to see such valuable arts in wrappings, hanged on racks, and on the floor. It allowed an interaction with pieces that I had never dreamed of. For example, I saw the top of a Frank Stella piece and I had a top view of so many statues. It was an amazing experience!

Eighth Week

Academics.

Friday, Hugh and I discussed my stay at Oxford.  He wished me all the best and concluded that I could email him at any time for recommendations and must stay in touch whenever possible.  I also received an excellent on my last assignment, which he said was, by far, the best work I produced.  He hopes I work with Milton in my postgraduate studies.  :D

Non-educational bit.

Tuesday, Jeffre and I traveled to Leavesden.  We spent the day at the Harry Potter Studios Tour.  Little can describe how in awe I was.  Jeff mentioned on multiple occasions that it was "A kick in the childhood."  I actually puled slightly when I passed through to the model of Hogwarts.  "Harry in Winter" swelled as I entered the soundstage and the studio lights faded into night.  

Wednesday, I attended my last formal dinner at New College.  The dinner featured tender slices of turkey, roasted potatoes, pools of gravy, and crackers.  There are pictures floating around of me in my gown and paper crown.  After dinner, I spent the evening — and much of the next day — with Nino and Allison.

Thursday evening, I took tea at The Grand Café (England's first coffee house) with Elaine.  She and I visited Magdalen, where I realized how soon Oxford would no longer be part of my routined life.

Saturday, I spent the day with Nino and Allison.  We climbed St Mary's and watched the early sunset over the city.  Nino left for London shortly after and, I'll admit it, I sobbed.  

Sunday, I spent the early afternoon with Allison.  We took tea (her first!) and made plans to meet sometime while she stays in London over the next few weeks.  We also got matching Varsity jackets because we're pretentious, but precious.

So ends Michaelmas term.
