THE NEWS OF A NEW CHILD IS generally met with happy smiles & sincere congratulations. Bertrand & Violet seemed over the moon -- a phrase which here means extremely elated -- to have a new baby in the house.
Klaus, on the other hand, seemed displeased at the idea. He’d been burying himself in his books far more frequently than usual, & his mother had noticed. So in act to cheer him up, & perhaps to change his mind on the matter a little, Beatrice had bought him a new book with some tea & freshly baked cookies, laying it all on a tray on the table by the chair he loved to read in.
“ What are you reading about today, my darling ? ”
