I started January by asking Dean what he wanted for his birthday - he said nothing.
I asked him on the fifth day of January and he told me that he didn't need anything - he had everything he could need.
I asked again on the fifteenth of January and Dean told me to stop asking - it was just another day so not to worry.
'Well fuck that,' I thought and began planning to give Dean what I hoped he'd like for a birthday.
I decided that as long as there was no hunt going on we'd start his birthday celebration the night before with some movies and snacks - and if things were on my side maybe we'd fall asleep together. It wouldn't be the first time that had happened but I wanted nothing more than to roll over and tell him happy birthday the moment his eyes opened.
If that didn't work out, I'd wake him up to a big breakfast and a freshly baked pie.
And because you just can't tell with the supernatural I had a plan C for if the boys were on a hunt - Dean would get a birthday text and be greeted with a fresh pie and a meal when he arrived back at the bunker.
I literally had thought of everything, and was so proud of myself about it.
When the week before his birthday Sam happened to find a "milk run" of a hunt but I didn't think anything of it. I knew that although it meant Dean might not be there for the actual day I could still lavish him with gifts and love.
I stood at the map table with a small list of things Dean asked me to pick up on a supply run - a big step that he fully trusted me to take a car from the garage and go on a supply run for them!
All I kept thinking was how much Dean deserved to have good things - both boys did but I felt like Sam was already more willing to accept that than Dean. I was trying to take things at Dean's pace but he was constantly rebuilding walls as I took the bricks down, and that was honestly making me feel a little disheartened.
I knew this would be how things would go - Dean in any universe has walls built - at least that's something I told myself to feel better.
Sam and Dean returned the day before Dean's birthday and things went perfectly. I was just finishing cooking dinner as they entered and called out greetings.
I called down the hallway, "In the kitchen, dinner is almost done," then I went back to the stove to remove the food from the heat.
Dean sniffed the air as he entered the room, "Oh this smells amazing,"
I hope it is," I smiled at him. "I made a friend at the library and she told me to give Cuban food a try. I got the cookbook she recommended," I showed him the book and he smiled.
"What 's the big occasion?" he asked as he scooted closer to the stove sniffing the air more.
"Tomorrow is your birthday so I figured you boys deserved to come back to a home cooked meal," I replied, adding Sam as part of the equation so Dean wouldn't be so fast to bat my idea down, and it seemed to work.
"That was very nice of you," he smiled and pecked a kiss to my forehead.
After finishing dinner Dean stretched and belched, Sam scowled at him and I laughed.
"That's gross Dean,” I quipped.
"Hey that's me - take it or leave it," he quipped.
I stood up and began to gather dishes, "You could at least say 'excuse me' ya know," I retorted before pecking a kiss to his cheek and walking to the sink.
"You two didn't give me the chance," he argued with slightly darker cheeks.
Sam rolled his eyes as he stood up, "I can do the dishes."
Dean followed his lead, "Yeah, you cooked, we'll clean."
Sam spun on him, "Nope, she baked you a pie and has a movie marathon set up for you so scoot," he shooed Dean toward the door before turning to me. "Go with him," he stage whispered and I hurried after Dean.
"Hey where you going?"
"I was told to go watch movies," he pointed in the direction of his room.
"Oh, we could do that."
"Did you want to watch movies somewhere else?"
"I would love to watch movies with you in whatever room you're most comfortable in.
"Ok, let's go Netflix and chill then," he grinned and I wondered if that meant the same thing in his world as it once did in mine.
We watched one of his scary movies and I pretty much hid my face in his shoulder the whole time - it was scarier than I'd imagined from the show.
"So," he hit pause as soon as the credits started rolling, "Was this part of your plan to get me to snuggle or - ?" he quirked an eyebrow.
"I didn't realize how scary that movie actually was."
"Looked less intense on your old show?"
I nodded and averted my eyes - suddenly feeling shy.
"We could watch something a little funnier," he offered, "But Sam said you made me a pie?"
"I did - it's cherry because I don't know how to bake apple pie yet."
He smiled, "I thought you baked all the best pies at home?"
"Well I do - of the ones I know how to make," I replied with what I hoped was a cheeky little grin.
"Should we get dessert and start another movie?"
"Yes, I'll be right back," I jumped up and hurried to the kitchen and began dishing up two beautiful looking slices of pie.
Dean entered the kitchen and propped himself against the counter on the opposite side of the island.
"So what made you decide to bake me a pie and watch movies?"
"Well, you told me you were coming home from the hunt and I thought this would be a good way to unwind. I also thought that you deserved to have something nice to come home to."
He waited a beat before replying, "I know you have this idea that I need to learn to be happier but I need you to know that I'm actually pretty happy with me and I don't really want to change."
"I don't want you to change," I replied - maybe a bit to quickly.
"I want to know you - not the fake TV version of you but you."
"I'm not going to give you some happy family life."
"I didn't ask for that. I will be honest if it happened I'd welcome it but if you don't want that life then I fully back you. I want you to be happy and I want you to let me into your life just a little. I don't want big grand gestures."
"Well, you're giving a lot them out and that makes me think the opposite."
"What big grand gestures?"
"Making Thanksgiving happen, this," he gestured wildly. "This is all a big deal and you don't need to."
"This isn't a big deal Dean, this is how people treat each other when they care. This is like the Christmas before you went to Hell and Sam gave you oil for your car from the gas station as a gift."
"No, this is more and it's too damn much."
"Are you saying this because you don't like it - and me, or because you don't think you're worth my time and effort?"
He shocked me by moving around the island, "No, don't think it's you. It's not you- you're great. I just don't see the point in making a big fuss-"
I shocked myself by placing a finger over his lips and shushing him, "Stop," I whispered before pushing up on my toes to press a kiss to his lips.
I was sure he'd push me away but one hand cupped the back of my head while the other came to my lower back and pulled me closer to him. His touch spurred me on and I brought one hand up to the back of his neck as my other hand landed on his chest. He nibbled at my lip ever so slightly and then broke the kiss without any warning.
In that moment I knew if he asked I'd do anything he wanted, but I didn't want to push him for intimacy he wasn't ready for.
"Sorry," I muttered.
"No, um it's fine. It was nice," he muttered, his ears turning a little red.
"That's one thing I've never understood. You look like - well, that," I gestured at him wildly, "And yet you get all blushy and shocked when people hit on you or compliment you."
"I'm really not all that."
"OK, but can you just realize that, to me - you are."
He cleared his throat and turned to the pie, "So, are we taking these to the other room, or are we just done for the night?"
He was trying to avoid the emotions the conversation and kiss had brought up and I let him.
"You get to choose Dean," I handed him the plate with the pie, "I have vanilla ice cream if you want a scoop?"
His eyes went wide, "Ice cream and pie?"
"Yeah," I sauntered to the freezer and took out the container.
A few minutes later we were back in Dean's room watching some comedy he said he'd wanted to see but Sam thought looked dumb - it was dumb - but Dean's laugh was so infectious I tried to soak up and enjoy every second of the stupidity on screen.
When that movie ended Dean looked at me and asked, "So, what's next, a rom-com?"
"No," I spat, "It's your birthday, you get to pick."
"Technically it's not my birthday for a few hours," he countered.
"Well, it's close enough," I grinned. "OK I have something for you and I'm too excited for you to see it so I'm going to give it to you now," I hurried to my room to grab the album I'd managed to score - an original printing of the Led Zeppelin album, "Physical Graffiti."
"I hope you like this," I told him as I handed him the package, hoping he didn't see my hand shaking. I was so nervous.
Dean looked at me and back at the package and carefully began to tear the paper off, when he saw what it was his eyes got huge, "What… what is this?"
He tore some more paper back, "Oh holy fuck is this," he paused. "How?"
I grinned, "I've been making friends around town while you were gone on hunts. I went to an estate sale and they had this for an absolutely unreasonably low amount, I almost felt guilty buying it at that price."
"This is worth like $1,000."
"I know, I didn't pay that much. I just saw they had records and went and hit the jackpot. Do you like it?"
"You know I do," he grinned at me, his eyes all watery. "To be honest I haven't gotten a birthday present that meant this much to me since I was four and my mom gave me a gift."
"I'm honored that you shared that with me Dean. I'm so glad you like it. You deserve to have nice things."
"I don't know why you're so nice to me."
"Well," I grinned, "You let me live here for free, you're funny, kinda cute."
"Hey, I thought you were totally into this," he gestured around his face.
I burst out laughing, "Yeah, I'm pretty into that. But you are funny and kind. You've never made me feel scared and there are plenty of men out there who have but I know I'm safe with you."
"This is super special," Dean whispered, "Wanna listen to it?"
"Hell yeah," I grinned as he moved toward his record player.
We listened to the album for a while before he asked, "You seem pretty sure about me, why?"
"Because my grandma always told me to trust my gut and not overthink."
"And your gut tells you-"
I cut him off, "That you're a good guy. And before you argue with me that you aren't a good person, or whatever, just let me finish. You may have done things in the past that make you feel like you're not a good guy but you are. We all make mistakes and we all hate ourselves for those mistakes, but if you have someone who cares for you in the background - someone who's willing to back you up, protect you, or just maybe argue with you a little to change your mind - well that's - that's-"
"That's family," he filled in.
"I was going to say that's someone who cares for or loves you."
"That can be true too. You don't know me."
"I obviously know you a little," I gestured toward the record player.
"Touche," he smiled softly, "You know some things about me."
"You'll have to teach me the rest."
"If you've seen the show you know that loving me can be dangerous."
"Technically you lived past the show's timeline so I don't know that, besides that was fake you," I scooted a little closer so I could rest my head on his shoulder, "I want to know the real you and maybe we write our own story this go round."
"Do you think we can?" he asked after a few minutes of silence.
"Yeah, I really do."
