Three Questions for The Roaring Girl’s Jacob Owen (Sebastian Wengrave):
What was your first acting experience? When I was in middle school I tried out for our school baseball team and auditioned for a production of Annie on the same day. I couldn't decide which one I loved more; they both made me feel uncomfortable, in the moment, and gave me a purpose. But, the coach was happy to make the decision by not taking me past the first round of try outs. Then I fell in love with acting very shortly after.
What about the play resonates with you most/are you most excited to share and why? Thomas Middleton & Thomas Dekker, the playwrights, resonate with me most. Middleton & Dekker employ an ambitious and optimistic view of how women are, and not how they should be represented. Moll and Mary go through great strides by out running, out cunning, and standing up against the prejudice that many women still have to confront every day. This play was first published in 1611 and Middleton & Dekker’s vision for the acceptance of love and equality is still prominent in our society today.
What is the biggest challenge this piece has posed to you? This play has been a sport to work on. The stylized tragicomedy and verse keeps me on my feet every scene. Middleton leaves behind clues in the text, whether it is suggested blocking notes in the punctuation, or a character's objective in their soliloquy. Staying active, aware, and honest while riding the verse is always exhilarating and demanding.
