What does rehearsal director usually do?

This is definitely a question for someone who actually works in theater (which I do not.) Does anyone want to chime in to answer this question?  

All I know is that they direct rehearsals (which is somewhat obvious), observe performers during the show, and give constructive criticism/notes. I assume they teach roles to new performers as well, but I don’t know.  There may be much more to it, but again, this isn’t my area of expertise.

Noir Town

Great script as usual.

Solid plots, of course. More importantly, playing with time lines is a dangerous game,it’s all too easy becoming a gimmick, confusing people for no good reason. The writer obviously recognizes that, and has made effort to help audience understand the story, without seeming contrived.

Although the setting is not as good as The Visitation, this is understandable: you can’t have a whole museum to play with everytime, can you? The only thing might be worth complaining is...sometimes I can barely hear what performers are talking. The place is too small for large crowd, but too big to hear the lines 🤷‍♀️

The acting is professional, performers have done good enough job to tell the story. Though I’d say they can be even more fantastic if the characters have more room to develop.

Anyway, if you’re into a good story, go buy a ticket(only $35!!!), and do it fast!

The Unbrunch

Golly I did need a real brunch. I was starving, and The Unbrunch definitely took care of my stomach.

It’s hard to define what it is. I heard in early days of ballet, the performance happened during banquets so guests can catch a breath between courses, but the Unbrunch is definitely not that.

It’s more of a buffet, both the food and the performances. Plus, it’s sprinkled with cash bars, drinking games, and small riots. Everything looks swanky.

I guess if you follow one character religiously you’ll get some logic out of the story they’re trying to tell,

but, heck, who the hell is looking for logic in a Alice-in-wonderland adaptation?

As always, like many other immersive shows I’ve been to, it’s gonna be twice the fun if there were only half of the guests, but then, they’ll raise the ticket price three times to reach four times profits (they have the right to, of course).

Any other shows/events/activities you recommend this week?

A good source for all things immersive in NYC is No Proscenium NYC.  That will give you a sense of what’s on.  

I really enjoyed “The Illusionist’s Table” at the McKittrick. It was an intimate evening of magic, and the food was great! 

I have tickets for the remount of The Unbrunch, and I’m really excited to see it.  I’ve heard great things!

Then She Fell is always a good choice.  I love that show. 

If you enjoy escape room type puzzles and Battle Angel Alita, then “Passport to Iron City” might be fun for you.  I went with a couple of friends and we had a good time. 

I’ve also heard that “Chained” at The Future of Storytelling is good.  (You might see some SNM alumni.)

I haven’t been to see very much lately, so this list is a little sparse, but I hope you find something great!

The Mortality Machine

A game-show. Audience will be randomly assigned roles to play upon arriving. It would be a bit overwhelming at beginning when you don’t know who’s who. Luckily, audience are divided into smaller groups so we don’t have to remember all the names.

When we enter the basement, the room, at first sight, has been transformed to something like a escape room: we should hunt for clues for what’s happened and what’s going on. As the game-show progresses, we learned more about the in-game characters and finally meet them in person.

Audience has been given a sense of control. It looks as if we can decide the narrative, but sometimes it’s like shouting to stone walls. (Ugh the frustration when you realize human are more difficult to interact than video game characters.)

I feel the story is probably well-written if we can explore more. I’m intrigued anyway. One of the audience member made a great ending, kudos to him!

I feel this kind of show would be much more fun with less players. But creating complex storylines and a variety of roles seem more in line with SinkingShip’s style. I guess this sense of chaos is what they’re going for.
