NOTE TO SELF: The sandwich wasn't bad -- I appreciated that the bread wasn't toasted to the point that it would tear up the roof of my mouth -- but look at the dust on those chips. They were nearly impossible to eat because of the little inhale just before I take bites -- I nearly choked every time. And it wasn't just me. Matt had lunch with me and he choked as well. Next time get a salad, or at least skip the chips. I had high hopes for this meal because I haven't been here in the history of this blog (pre-2017). For that reason, it might be a most disappointing meal of the year.

A Cure for Diner Deficiancy

We spend a lot of time highlighting truly exceptional cuisine. Restaurants and purveyors who break all the rules, and create food so new and forward-thinking they must have come back from the future and schooled their younger-self [sorry i just saw "Looper".]

But what about the flip-side? The old haunts that just hold it down for tradition? EJ's Luncheonette is pure uncut grade-A Americana. I always say that places like Long Island and Central NY really have Manhattan beat in the diner game. EJ's is the one that stacks up.

As a kid, I spent afternoons at the downtown location (now closed) slurping down milkshakes from those classic steel canisters, bigger than my body. Their current home [73rd & 3rd] is just as good as I remember. Comfort-food, with the emphasis on comfort. Eggs, Waffles, and Challah French toast are served all day, while the PM hours bring out Burgers, Meatloaf, and other things mom cooked (or that you WISHED mom cooked). -JS

PS- I spotted Eric Ripert crossing the street there this morning. Wanted to holla at the dude, but he was deep in elegant 4-star cell phone conversation.
