"You could have been killed!"
The two had been traveling together at the edge of Zaun in the waning hours of daylight, mucking around in the wastelands of abandoned imperialist projects and rundown construction sites. To two teenagers with nothing better to do, the freedom to explore abandoned projects and look at the run-down machines that littered the vast expansion of half-built buildings was an absolute blast; they’d spent the entire day, it seemed, going from site to site looking at what they could find.
The two had been climbing the remains of a building that had yet to be built, run-down and falling apart in its unfinished state. The foundation was there, as was rickety stairs and wooden beams that made up a rough blueprint of what the finished product would have looked like, but a roof, flooring and solid walls were all distinctly missing, giving the shell of that building an eerie, surreal vibe.
It was so appealing to the two that they had to check it out.
Taliyah had been walking on a beam, one foot in front of the other, Ekko right behind her. They were laughing, talking about something - anything - and Taliyah had felt so elated in his presence that she hadn’t noticed where she stepped.
Even though the building wasn’t finished yet, it was four stories high, and the duo had been on the third floor when it happened.
The beam, weak from weather-wear and unsupportive of her weight, gave a quick groan of protest before it snapped beneath her. Taliyah fell with a scream, only about a foot, before Ekko’s arms grabbed her from behind with expert precision, hoisting her up with a relieved yell.
Taliyah scrambled into Ekko’s arms as he helped to pull her up, stepping back so they could rest on a section of the floor that had far more support to it than the simple beam they’d been exploring had had.
Taliyah was about to thank Ekko when she noticed the tears that streaked his face, the snot running down his nose. The way his chest heaved up and down as he held her in his arms, entirely too tight, as if he’d never see her again. Ekko broke down and sobbed, pulling her towards him, fisting his hands into the back of her robes and pressing his wet, crying face against the side of her neck.
Taliyah’s eyes widened in shock as she hesitantly returned the hug, mind racing to find out why he was so shaken up. She gave a small gasp as she realized - with the expert precision of his moves, knowing exactly where she’d fall and exactly where he’d have to grab to ensure he caught her…
Ekko must have seen her fall countless times before he finally could catch her. Ekko must have rewinded countless times, each time failing to grab her properly and watching her fall three stories to her inevitable demise.
Ekko must have seen her die. Perhaps way more than he ever should have had to.
“Ekko…” Her hug on him is tighter, suddenly afraid, tears forming in the corners of her eyes. “… How many times did you have to rewind…? How many times… did you have to see that?”
