It’s rare to find an act purely focused on raw acoustics, encapsulating an idea with sounds first, words second. Inspired by everyday objects and ideas, and considering the societal pressures of today (“I pollute your mind / Untag the parts I don’t want you to find”) resulted in the abstract and earthy sounds of “Crystalline.” The percussive style is bright and insightful, keeping a leisurely pace while deciphering the inter-connection in our lives. It feels unplugged and present.
Ekoti is creating an immersive experience without the special effects – the mastery of guitar sounds, organic and with a meaningful purpose. Even in music, it is easy to be disillusioned and entranced by over-produced creations. “Crystalline” is grounded in the roots of busking on the side of a boardwalk, captivating for its settling tone but questioning narrative. I admire the soul and artistry put into this track, containing elements of Americana, folk and indie rock.
Ekoti is Steele (lead vocals, guitar), James Hrankowski (drums), Joey Levitsky (banjo) and Spencer Dodd (bass).
The band will be embarking on an Park Art Tour this July with Artisan Emma (Canadian visionary painter, muralist and textile traveling artist, Emma Wetherill). The tour includes a date at Spade Coffee & Spirits (1858 Commercial Drive) in Vancouver on July 4th.
I love the experimental design of “I Know What It Is,” with Steele employing recording program, Ableton Live, for tracking and looping. Heavy synths, programmed drum sounds, live guitar, and vocals that both haunt and provoke sentiment, the song is an homage that retains its intimacy but is relatable, and beautifully honest. Listen to it below.
