Hey there, this is a different kind of post than what I usually do but oh well
Most of you probably have heard of the protests in Turkey following Ekrem Imamoğlu's (Erdoğan's main rival) arrest, which as a mutual of mine(who cannot make their own post because the government is monitoring the users' internet activity and there are high chances of being detained/arrested) said: "That was the catalyst, but the root of this matter is the fact that erdoğan is taking away our right to elect and be elected and turning the regime into an autocratic dictatorship when it should be democratic and absolutely secular. That's not all of it obviously, and definitely not the only thing that we are protesting against, but it's the most important one of all"
Since March 19 over 1900 people have been arrested (students, journalists, etc).
To make the protests look violent, while they are in fact peaceful, the government is sending provocators to make the cops mad and show how the police is being "treated"(ahem ahem) in the protests.
The police are violent towards people that were protesting peacefully, both out in the protests and when they have already been detained. They are attacking the protestors with pepper spray, plastic bullets and high-pressurized water.
"poor treatment and torture of the arrested students, there are 301 so far and some have been unjustly subjected to nude searchings, beatings that resulted in untreated broken bones and injuries that they've been forced to live with for more than a week, and general mistreatment and sexual assault as well. the doctors are not reporting injuries caused by the police and the cops aren't leaving the room while the patients are looked over."

Also, guess who else have been detained. Imamoğlu's lawyer. Because of course he cannot have the chance to defend himself, can he?

A short recap of what is happening in Turkey
May 20th 2016: An Amendment to the Constitution of the Republic of Turkey, which allowed lifting of the parliamentary immunity of the deputies of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey has been adopted. Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the leader of the major opposition party and the founder party of the Republic, said that they will vote for it even though it is against the constitution.
November 3rd 2016: Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, co-leaders of the Kurdish opposition party HPD, were arrested and imprisoned since their parliamentary immunities were lifted. They are still in prison despite the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights multiple times stating their immediate release.
July 9th 2018: Turkey has adopted the Presidency system which put enormous power into Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's hands after the results of the 2017 constitutional referendum which was riddled with electoral misconduct.
March 31st 2019: CHP candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu was elected as the Mayor of the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality after 25 years of right-party ruling. The Kurdish opposition party HDP did not nominate a candidate for İstanbul, effectively supporting CHP's candidate. İmamoğlu was re-elected on June 23rd by a landslide after AKP disputed the March 31st election.
May 14th 2023: General elections were held and CHP helped candidates from 5 small right parties elected as an electoral strategy by forming an alliance. 39 parliament members from those parties got elected under CHP listings. Since then, 5 of them joined AKP (Erdoğan's party). In addition, 7 members from another party that could enter the parliament with the help of this alliance have joined AKP. On the other hand, Can Atalay, the candidate of TİP (leftist workers' party) who was a political prisoner during the election and upon his election for the parliament was supposed to be released according to the constitution, is still in prison even though there are 3 separate rulings of the Constitutional Court of Turkey for his immediate release.
November 8th 2023: Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu lost the elections for the leadership of CHP during the general assembly of the party after 8 years and 13 consecutively lost elections. In his place, Özgür Özel was elected.
March 31st 2024: CHP under Özgür Özel's leadership won 35 provinces in local elections and had the most votes overall for the first time since AKP came into power in 2002.
October 30th 2024: Ahmet Özer, a Kurdish politician and the mayor of an İstanbul municipality of CHP was arrested with alleged PKK-relations. His arrest came after the beginning of the PKK–Turkey peace process. The peace process, after 2 years, has come to a halt.
January 13th 2025: Another mayor of an İstanbul municipality of CHP was arrested with corruption accusations. Since then, 26 mayors of CHP have been arrested and/or impeached with similar accusations. While most cases have been ongoing, no credible evidence, other than eyewitnesses whose accounts of the events are based on what they heard from unknown others, has been presented by the prosecutors. Some people were released or told that they would be released upon using effective remose law but the statements show that they are blackmailed for their or their loved ones' continued detainment by the prosecutors if they would not give statements against İmamoğlu and CHP upper management.
March 18th 2025: Ekrem İmamoğlu's Bachelor's degree diploma was annulled. İmmamoğlu got his diploma in 1994. One of the 37 people whose diplomas were also annulled is a professor at a respected university in Turkey. This annulement came after İmamoğlu said he will be a candidate for the Presidency of Turkey in the next general elections. A college diploma is required for presidential candidacy. Ironically, Erdoğan's diploma was never seen.
March 19th 2025: İmamoğlu was arrested with corruption charges. He is still imprisoned and his trial is ongoing.
March 23rd 2025: CHP held nationwide pre-election for the presidential candidate with İmamoğlu as the only candidate. İmamoğlu had 15 million votes; more than 13 million of them were from people who were not party members.
May 21st 2026: Absolute nullity was declared for the November 8th 2023 elections of the general assembly of CHP. This ruling reverted the CHP management back to its 2023 assembly with Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu as the leader. Kılıçdaroğlu accepted this ruling stating that CHP needs to be cleaned of bad apples, agreeing with the operations done against his former comrades. During the almost two-year operations, which included disgusting attacks such as rumors of group sex parties with female party members, release of personal phone recordings of a husband and wife, rumors of an affair of Özel with a young mayor who passed away recently, he never once supported his party-mates or showed discontent with AKP's injustice.
May 24th 2024: The above photograph of Özgür Özel was taken after he was forced out of his office by police and protested the absolute nullity ruling with his party, other left parties, and citizens by walking to the parliament under heavy rain.

Scores face prison over participation in Istanbul demonstrations outside city hall
A Turkish public prosecutor is seeking three-year jail terms for seven journalists arrested while covering protests against the jailing of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office filed an indictment against Bulent Kilic, Kurtulus Ari, Yasin Akgul, Zeynep Kuray, Gokhan Kam, Ali Onur Tosun and Hayri Tunc for violating a law prohibiting participation in unsanctioned protests. The journalists were arrested on 24 March for covering a protest outside City Hall in the Istanbul area of Sarachane against Imamoglu's arrest. They were released days later under judicial supervision.

Students are actively getting harmed and humiliated by polices whose actual job is to keep them safe and secure while students express themselves.
