Hi! There's been some discussion under the Eve vs Rey poll about whether Eve should be included in this tournament/future tournaments. There's various opinions and if you don't wanna answer this it's fine, (I know you prefer things like this stay within the notes, which is fair) but I was just wondering if you had anything to add to the discussion as both the organiser and as the person who submitted the propaganda for Eve?
so i submitted eve because i received several submissions for mythological figures (helen of troy, hera, demeter) and i figured there was no reason to limit ourselves to polytheistic mythologies. in fact it felt kind of hypocritical to include only these figures of polytheistic myth, as it sort of implies that misogyny is somehow foreign to monotheism which is obviously absurd. my other big reason was what i said in the propaganda, namely that while the original text is deeply and undeniably misogynistic, the christian interpretations of it add a bunch of bullshit that wasn't even there in the bible and are somehow way more misogynistic. and i do think that is a type of fandom misogyny, not in a simplistic "haha religion is like fandom" sort of way, but in the sense that the original text was plenty misogynistic in its own right, but lots and lots of people still vastly misinterpret it due to their own misogyny.
with all that said, i do understand the frustration at eve's continued presence in this tournament, because ultimately this whole thing is about fandom and i think it's a valid critique to argue that eve isn't really a fandom figure. so while i'm obviously not going to disqualify her from the current tournament, i am considering disqualifying all mythological and religious figures from future free my girl tourneys (not girl of all time because that's not going to be about fandom in the same way this tournament is about fandom). if i do this, i would still accept submissions for reinterpretations of mythological figures from specific properties. so for example, demeter from lore olympus would be fine, but demeter from greek mythology in general wouldn't be. but the idea would be that if the character is not strictly fandom related they can't be included.
but from what i've seen, opinions have been pretty divided on this topic, and i would be interested to hear what more people think about all this before i make any decisions for next time.
