Today, February 21st, Bangladeshis around the world are in observance of Omor #Ekushey (অমর একুশে), a day in remembrance of the people who lost their lives and for the millions who protested in 1952 to protect and keep the beautiful language of Bangla (বাংলা) as the language of its people. This movement (http://bit.ly/1dVEchh) not only paved the way toward the independence of Bangladesh in 1971 but inspired UNESCO to declare February 21st as International Mother Language Day (http://bit.ly/1fl4ARM). As a Bangladeshi who was born in Bangladesh but grew up in America since age 6/7, I am so grateful that my parents taught me at an early age how to speak and write in the Bangla language, where Bangla was only spoken at home so that we wouldn't forget our mother living America, introduced me to all of our traditions, customs, attending cultural functions to celebrate Bangladeshi holidays and also shared with me the country's history so that I understood all the sacrifices that were made to preserve Bangladesh's rich cultural heritage. Today, Bangla is ranked #7 of the 1st language speakers and ranked #11 including 2nd language speakers http://bit.ly/1dVD25b) with ~208 million who speak Bangla (189 million as their 1st language, 19 million as their 2nd language). I'm celebrating (in spirit) with my sisters and brothers around the world. অমর একুশে and Happy International Mother Language Day! - মোহাম্মদ ওয়াসিম উদ্দিন A lot of the facts was taken from সুমাইয়া কাজী (sumaya kazi) thank you! photo: The #Shaheed #Minar, a national monument to commemorate those killed during the Bengali Language Movement (at Shaheed Minar, Dhaka)
Ekushey: Between language and culture
Bangladeshis, home and abroad, celebrate Ekushey February to remember Bangla Language Movement and to honor those who sacrificed their lives to preserve Bangla as their mother language in February 21st of 1952. Bangladeshis feel proud to think Ekushey February as their very own achievement – an immediate triumph in protecting the rights to read, write, speak, and listen in Bangla. Although the…
