Hi! 5/6 if you haven’t already answered. What is your favorite and most hated song in your native language?
Agh! So hard! Alright, the ones that I hate, easily a lot of reggaeton and cumbia that’s hyper problematic and objectifying of women (Cuatro Babys, for instance). I also can’t stand Arjona. Really, I wanna kick that guy’s teeth off.
For my favorite ones… shit, so many… I love Me Vieron Cruzar, by Calle 13 (and really those guys have written very little I don’t absolutely adore). It’s easily one of my favorite songs ever, especially because of the little detail that the last 4 notes are the first 4 of the Argentinean national anthem. It’s a song about football, failing, glory, immortality, etc.
Serrat’s Tío Alberto I absolutely adore too, as well as Donde Quiera Que Estés, El Roxy… Shit man… I grew up with Serrat as my background music. I also love Llegar a Viejo, and Princesa, and Disculpe el Señor… Ok, ok, I’m gonna choose just one.
BENITO.
God fucking dammit I’m already crying (it’s a song about two homeless men, the narrator and Benito. The narrator is talking to a very rich man, who invites the two of them for a nice, fancy, warm dinner. He tells him his story, occasionally mentioning Benito. After a while, the narrator wakes up, realizing it was all a dream and that the river level has risen under the bridge where they were sleeping, and happily tells Benito about his dream as he gets the firewood away from the water. When Benito doesn’t answer, the narrator realizes that the cold has killed him as they slept. He begs him to not do this to him, but eventually takes his socks to wear them over his own, given that Benito will never be cold again, and apologizes since he has to go, because the river level keeps rising). The chorus goes: “So much you have, so much you’re worth, and that’s that. Today we breathe. Tomorrow we stop breathing.”
As for ARGENTINEAN music…
I’d probably have to go with tango. So much tango. All of the tango. But perhaps good ol’ Volver by Gardel takes the prize, a song about returning to the homeland twenty years later, scared of what you’ll find.
Honorable mention yo. Madame Ivonne and En Esta Tarde Gris are MAD MUSIC. Second favorite is Melodías de Arrabal by far tho.
Then there’s the good ol’ cumbias and cuartetos that actually have awesome lyrics. Prime example, La Mona Jiménez’s Amor Secreto (about a girl who has fallen in love with an unknowing priest and prays so God will erase him from her thoughts, or let them be together)
Oh man then there’s Rodrigo’s La Mano de Dios (God’s Hand, about Diego Maradona’s biography, and how he came from the poorest neighborhoods and how then he fell in addiction. It’s really a tear jerker.)
“¿Tal vez jugando pudiera a su familia ayudar…?” (Maybe, playing, he could help his family?) Shit, gets me every time, same as “La fama le presentó una blanca mujer de misterioso sabor y prohibido placer, que lo hizo adicto al deseo de usarla otra vez involucrando su vida. Y es un partido que un día el Diego está por ganar” which means “fame introduced him to a white woman (cocaine) of mysterious flavor and forbidden pleasure that made him addict to the wish of using her again, risking his life. And it’s a game that one day, the Diego is going to win.”
Dale, Die’… largá la bosta esta. Seguimos esperando el milagro…
Thanks for sending this ask! I took a lot to answer it because I had to, of course, listen to each song at least five times! ♥
