Getting ready

N: Well, Elaine. Tonight’s the night. If you’ve got any chance with Jake, it’s going to be gone by midnight so I hope you’ve rehearsed. Eli: Like a modern-day Cinderella... In short-shorts. Elaine: Shut up, you guys. He’s just a guy, I think I can talk to him. Eli: Not like you did in the cafeteria last year, I hope. N: C-C-Can I have a nap-nap-napkin please? And then what happened? Eli: She tripped over her own two feet and sent milk EVERYWHERE. Elaine: That’s not what happened! Eli: So, you didn’t drown the new lunch lady in 2%? Elaine: Will you two stop? We’re seniors now, I think I can handle this. Plus, I have you two & liquid courage as back up. I’ll be fine. Eli: You better be, because Corey just texted and they’ll be here in 5.

E: I didn’t mean to be out so late. I was going to call, but I was with Nora and Eli and- J: Elaine Regina Botello-Rosales, you better stop right there. I raised you better than to lie to me! E: Papa, I’m not lying! J: You’re not lying? Then why did Nora come by the house asking when you’d be home, because you weren’t answering your phone?! E: I don’t know, I- J: You stay out all night, you barely show up for work.. I haven’t seen you all week! Where the hell have you been? ¿Sabes lo decepcionada que estaría tu madre? [Do you know how disappointed your mother would be?] E: Oh, so now Mama is mad too. Because of course, any time I act like a normal teenager, she would be disappointed. ¡Mamá no era una santa! [Mom was not a saint!] J: You listen here, child. You will not step foot out of this house until school starts. Everyone who comes in or out is checked with me. I’ve been trusting, but if this is the way you treat me after that, then forget it. Go to your room.

Some peace and quiet

E: Thanks for coming out here to get some peace and quiet with me... Aaaand for hanging out with me all night, of course. J: Hey, don’t worry about it. You’re actually pretty chill. E: You think so? J: I mean, yeah, of course... When you’re not setting the science lab on fire, because I said bless you. E: You remember that? J: Elaine, the whole school had to evacuate. Of course I remember that!

The proposal

N:  So. My dad, you know, the King of Flakes said that he wanted to make the past few years up to me. E: Barf. N: Right? I think it’s because Mom’s taking him to court again this week. Anyways, he gave me the keys to his cabin! I’ve already got the guest list written up for this rager, all I need is for you to say yes! ... Aaaand maybe grab some supplies, of course. E: And how do you know Jake will be at this “rager”? N:  Because he’d be stupid not to be. Are you in? Eli will be so pissed if you say no. E: Yeah, okay, I’m in. When are we going? N: This weekend!  E:  Wait- this weekend?! I can’t, Dad and I were supposed to go to the car show at the fairgrounds this weekend. N:  So, tell him it’s a big family trip and that I need you there for moral support. Because I do.  E:  Nora, I can’t. We always go together, you know that. It’s been his favorite tradition since Mom died. N:  Do it for Jake, Elaine. I’m sure it’ll be okay if you miss this once. E: I’ll think about it, but I’m not going to break my dad’s heart just to inflate your ego.

Nora has an idea

E: I’m sorry, we only accept cash or credit. Sarcasm and bad attitudes are not considered payment methods. N: Whatever, E’. If people can’t tell that I’m kidding, maybe they deserve what’s coming. Don’t you want to know why I’m here? E: Fine, let’s hear it.  N: Now, I know you said you would never be a part of my “crazy schemes” again... E:  You mean, after the after-hours silent disco pool party that got me grounded for two weeks? N: How was I supposed to know that you can’t climb fences?! Look, I have an idea and I think you’re really going to be down for this one! E: No way! N: Not even if I told you that Jacob Mercer would be there?

E: Alright, fine. You got me. Let’s talk about this in the break room.
