This engagement of the Second Boer was a clear victory for the British although they had to give up the position and the Boers took it back 2 days later.

Who was John Shurlock

From what I managed to find, John Shurlock was a trumpeter of the 5th Lancers during the Second Boer war. At the battle of Elandslaagte on 21 October 1899 he charged with his regiment and after sounding the call for the charge he took out his revolver and shot three Boers. He was cheered in his camp after the battle and became a hero in Britain.

The battle of the Second Boer war was one of the few clear British tactical victories in this conflict. However, the British abandoned the position as Sir George White feared a Boer attack on Ladysmith.
