Notable Dark Synth 2018 (so far)

The first third of the year has passed, so I wanted to share what I think are the best darksynth releases so far this year. We’ve had some major drops, including the return of carpenter Brut to the scene with a new EP and 3 big releases from the Blood Music label. In no particular order: 

Electric Dragon - Communion

Stunning dark horror synth by Electric Dragon. This is only his second album, but he’s putting out something that sounds pretty damn groovy without being derivative. Not really cyberpunk, not really retro, but definitely dark.

Lazerpunk - Death & Glory

The teaser for this album said “There will be no neon lights. There will be no heatfelt melodies. There will be no Miami sunset.” That’s accurate. Lazerpunk delivers some hard, often harsh, bassy, EDM-inspired sounds closer to that of Daniel Deluxe than Lifelike. Some tracks are like nothing else in the genre- Black Lambo being a standout. Daniel Deluxe and Quixotic make appearances in this album, also, a pleasant surprise that works well. If you like the hard stuff, you’ll love this.

Elay Arson - Spirit | Death

Elay Arson is consistently putting out some of the more interesting sounds in the genre. In Spirit | Death, he takes this a step even further. This album is absolutely like nothing else, being just as much metal as it is synth. Heavy use of guitar makes this possible, but there’s also flecks of spoken word, piano, growling vocals, and sounds that typify chiptune and ambiance in there. Completely unique. I can’t recommend it enough. Give the full thing a listen-through.

Deadlife - The Order of Chaos

Honestly, probably my favorite album of the year so far (this makes two years in a row that Deadlife has dominated my tastes). DL has managed to once again put out an amazingly dancy, cyberpunk, story-driven album with catchy melodies and beats and a killer story. Like the prequel to this album (2017′s Bionic Chrysalis), the Order of Chaos mixes in a story through track titles, snippets of spoken word, and periods of primarily speech. The whole album is just absolute bangers, tho, so please listen and enjoy.

GosT - Possessor

So GosT has been one of the biggest names in darksynth for a while now, at least since his 2015 album Behemoth  if not earlier, and by golly is he working to keep that spot. This album isn’t for everyone tho- unlike his past works which were heavier on the synth, Possessor leans much more on the metal inspirations. While still synthy, the tracks in Possessor vary from death to black metal, sometimes screaming and powerful, sometimes meticulous and slow, sometimes filled with vocals, sometimes distorted, and other times more typically synthwave. The album is all around great and a huge shove for the metalsynth subgenre (i.e. Elay Arson, Gör FLsh, Master Boot Record) and is right at home on a black metal label. If you can at all bear extreme metal, please enjoy this evil and powerful headbanger of an album.
