Another place that has become part of the rotation with my parents is El Cholo, since it's nearby and it's very consistent, not only the food, but also with the friendly service. From his stories, it seems that my father first gravitated to Mexican food while he lived in boarding houses in downtown LA in the early 60s, claiming that he had hot chile duels with the local Mexicans at the joints he frequented. During this era, regional Mexican cuisine was probably represented more in home kitchens, and Mexican restaurant food meant big combination plates and strong margaritas. This is the stuff that Angelinos, along with many non-latino immigrants to LA discovered during much of the 20th century, and learned to like. Even my traditional Japanese mother gets excited about a plate of enchiladas. At El Cholo, I get excited about the green corn #tamales, which are available between May and October. I kept missing that window during my past several visits to LA, but not this time. #elcholo #losangeles #美味しい #ロサンゼルス #懐かしい #gastronogram #forkyeah #foodbeast #instayum #instafood #foodstagram #yahoofood #yougottaeatthis #eaterla #eatthis #lefooding #foodporn #foodpics #food #foodforthought #chowhound #igfood #foodexplorer (at El Cholo) https://www.instagram.com/p/B01GGN9hlaO/?igshid=1o1ricz5i6a2t
