(based on Muddy Pages, Golden Ink by @satohwa fanfic on Ao3 )
okay so!
sleep is one of the oldest eldritch beings. the only ones older than them are the deep and the mother. they have both been celebrated as gods and forgotten. they're always there, slumbering in the other world.
the eldest three rarely care for mortals, but younger beings like to meddle. it's how humans discover fire, how they learn to domesticate animals, how soulmates later come to be. a few whispered words can rewrite history, a wave of the hand can rewrite a beings very core.
some beings get attached to the mortals. keeps them alive longer. gifts them with power. it's how myths and legends are created. sleep has never held an interest in such matters.
sleep hasn't held an interest in many things. not until the trickster being bless - or curse - two charlatans with powers beyond their understanding. not until the deep brings said charlatans to their attention.
a city of gold is discovered, a culture is saved, a duo becomes a trio. sleep watches all the while. watches even closer once soulmates are brought into existence.
there is only so long you can watch from afar. with encouragement from the deep and no protest from the mother, sleep decides to take human form. a human name.
remy as sleep, roman and remus as the charlatans, janus as the trickster, and virgil as the third

how basically anyone away from the Twins reacts to each other? well I guess you've covered how Sleep and the Trickster react to each other at the start, but the Twins seem to be the linchpin in bringing everyone together and I'm curious over how Virgil's reacting in all this, or what Sleep and the Trickster think of him given it was when he joined up that they revealed themselves
Sleep and the Trickster had never interacted before Sleep attempted to come in contact with the Trio. Their first interaction is simply the Trickster staring Sleep down.
It's the first time that Sleep interacts with an eldritch besides the Deep.
Sleep leaves the stare-down with an interest in not only the Trio, but also the Trickster. They wouldn't mind meeting the other eldritch again, although the mortals come first.
The Trickster leaves the stare-down wary of Sleep, and more protective of the Twins. They have yet to decide what they think of the Third, who remained quiet for as long as the Twins engaged them in conversation.
The Twins do not know what to make of the unknown being made of space that had been getting close to them, but they finally have a face of sorts for their protector. Roman doesn't quite know what to do with another who is loud about everything but their feelings. Remus is fascinated by the possibilities, entranced by the chaos.
Virgil knows that even if the Gods turned out to be Charlatans, they are still protected. He can die, and they cannot. It makes him a quiet watcher in unknown situations, someone who can reign the brothers in when they stray too far from being human. Seeing actual Gods - for what else could they be - is nothing like when he first saw the brothers. The one of Space is just as quiet as him, which could be dangerous. The one of Shape is loud like both the brothers in a multitude of ways, which makes them dangerous to trust.
(When Remus first met Virgil, he saw someone who could thrive if they let go of their shell.
When Roman first met Virgil, he saw someone who could take his brother away from him.)
Remus has always seen more than other people. He has noticed the near invisible shapes shimmering in the air around them, the experience much like when a rainbow against the uneven surface of grey clouds forces you to strain your eyes to clearly make out the colours.
The shapes stand out to him even more once he regains consciousness after having gotten his head sliced off. The lingering sensation of something against his lips and the sudden white streak in his hair just make him more sure that what he is seeing is real. Something or someone has been watching over him and his brother, and whatever it is just brought them back to life.
Roman has not always seen more than other people, but he clearly remembers a sword going in between his ribs, piercing his heart. He clearly remembers the feeling of his life ending, and he clearly remembers life once more rushing through his veins.
And when he opens his eyes, he can't help but wonder how he never noticed the mesmerising shapes hovering in the air around them before.
A pair of twins grew up on the streets, alongside dogs and rats instead of humans. A pair of twins had to fight with tooth and nail for every scrap and every crumb. A pair of twins weren't expected to survive winter.
A pair of twins loved each other unconditionally. A pair of twins watched musicians and actors from the shadows of the alleyways. A pair of twins soaked up all knowledge they could, since none was handed to them.
A pair of twins grew into fine, young men instead of desperate animals. A pair of twins have the mindset of both predator and prey. A pair of twins cover up sharp edges with music and soft tones.
A pair of twins leave trails of blood behind as they desperately run towards a golden future. A pair of twins are nothing but broken parts held together. A pair of twins are willing to sacrifice anything but each other to survive.
A pair of twins are cornered and killed after winning a map in a rigged game. A pair of twins are Gifted and Watched by a being they don't know they should show gratitude to. A pair of twins hide away on a ship towards the unknown until they get thrown overboard and washed up on the shore of a city that will mistake them for Gods.
How are roman and Remus blessed by janus?
The Trickster does not know what has drawn them to the Charlatans. Perhaps the ingenuity, perhaps the dramatics. Perhaps nothing at all. The road travelled does not matter, as long as the destination is entertaining.
It's not the first charlatans to catch their attention, but it's the first to catch their Eye. The Trickster look over the two's shoulders, nudges their dice and swap their cards. The Charlatans win big and praises luck, as if their dice weren't already loaded, as if they didn't already keep cards up their sleeves. The Trickster has never been considered lucky before.
They watch as the Charlatans entertain for the sake of entertaining, not only as distraction during rigged games. They watch as the Charlatans share their winnings with children just as mischievous as them. They watch as the Charlatans are cornered by guards.
They watch as the sword goes clean through a neck and a heart.
Two identical bodies sunk to the dirty ground and they can no longer stand to just watch.
The Trickster materialises in a cloud of colours and shapes beyond human comprehension above the fallen bodies. Behind them, the guards have already run away, only leaving the stench of urine behind. The Trickster cares not for them. Revenge is not their expertise.
Hands that are not hands place a head in place where it was severed from a neck. Lips that are not lips press against human skin. Air that is not air is softly breathed into two pairs of still lungs.
A neck is sewn together not by tissue or thread but by a warm caress from something without warmth. A heart mends itself by the same caress. Colour drains from a tuft of hair and from an eye, making the identical no longer so.
The Charlatan that lost his head groans as he pushes newly white, almost transparent strands of hair out of his face. The Charlatan that had a broken heart groggily opens his miscoloured eyes - one the same warm brown of his brother, one an unending white simultaneously all the colours that can be perceived.
The Trickster hovers over them just as long as it takes a hummingbird's wings to beat before dematerialising.
Two Charlatans wake up in an alley, no longer able to die, and with some of their colours drained. They will never run out of luck. They will never run out of the tricks they need to survive. They will never run from the Trickster's watching Eye.
Two Charlatans leave an alley, tasting something bittersweet on their lips.
