Only 8 of these units were ever built by GMD for use hauling Toronto Commuter trains (hence the "TC" part of the name). These factory kitbashes sit on SD40 frames, have shortened noses and an extended carbody to house a separate diesel HEP plant. Amtrak purchased all 8 from GO Transit in 1988.
