Political violence breaks out in Mato Grosso state after argument between followers of rival presidential candidates
Chandranath Rath was personal assistant to Suvendu Adhikari, front runner to become West Bengal's new chief minister.
The aide to a top leader from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party has been shot dead in violence that broke out after elections in West Bengal state. Chandranath Rath was personal assistant to Suvendu Adhikari, seen as the front-runner to become the state's new chief minister after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the vote. Rath was on his way home on Wednesday night when he was killed. Police are investigating but haven't made any arrests yet. Rath is among at least three people killed in the eastern state since Monday when results were announced. Police said before Rath's death that they had arrested more than 400 people in connection with incidents of violence and intimidation. Violence is not uncommon in West Bengal after elections, with clashes often breaking out between rival party workers. On Monday, the BJP marked a historic victory in the state, which it has never won before, ending a 15-year-rule by Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) party. Tensions have been high in West Bengal for weeks, with the elections having been conducted in the backdrop of a controversial exercise to clean up voter rolls that left millions of people off the list. Banerjee has alleged that the exercise removed thousands of non-BJP voters, paving the way for her defeat. The BJP and India's Election Commission have repeatedly denied these allegations.

Missed Opportunity on Tanzania Election Violence
Publish Commission Report, Ensure Accountability
The commission established to investigate violence during and after Tanzania’s October 2025 general elections submitted its findings to President Samia Suluhu Hassan on April 23, but it missed an opportunity to establish the full truth and lay the foundation for accountability.
The commission chair, Mohamed Chande Othman, said the commission documented 518 deaths across 11 regions, noting that the figure may not be conclusive, and could not confirm media reports of mass graves. The full report has not been made public.
The commission reported allegations by victims and witnesses that security officers shot, injured, or killed people in their homes and shops. These findings are consistent with Human Rights Watch reporting that some people killed or injured by police officers were not involved in protests at all. But Othman did not meaningfully assess the lawfulness of the security forces’ conduct or patterns of alleged unlawful use of force. He said this issue warrants further “investigation” but did not specify what such an inquiry would entail.
The commission made some positive recommendations, including ensuring access to free medical services for injured people left with disabilities and allocating resources for psychosocial or mental health support. It also recommended promoting mechanisms for the government to better address citizens’ concerns and strengthen the playing field for all political actors.
