On the recent election

There was a lot of talk on tumblr two weeks ago, blaming the youth and minorities and people who didn’t vote in the election. As someone who has worked on political campaigns I can say that I don’t blame them. I’m frustrated by them, yes, but there are a lot of reasons people aren't engaged in politics and most of them have to do with the system failing them rather than people’s individual failures. It all seemed a little too victim-blamey. 

The people who drive me up the wall though, are the ones who are politically engaged. who identify as liberal or progressive or something farther left. who will talk your ear off about just how much they care about this election. And then won’t lift one finger to effect its outcome. 

Voting is the bare fucking minimum, and its not nearly enough to build any kind of movement. Did you make a single phone call or knock on a single door or attend a single meeting or register a single voter?

Politics is not a spectator sport.

A full two-thirds said they simply didn't have enough time to vote. More than half of this group - 35 percent of the total - said that scheduling conflicts with work or school kept them from getting to the polls last Tuesday. Another 34 percent of the total said they were simply too busy, or that they were sick, out of town, or forgot about election day.
