Why the FUCK is there no drawing references for electrical burns?? I can’t find shit and I finally managed to gain the motivation to draw but only for a cover for my fanfic and there’s just.. no electrical burns drawing references?? Or guides?? What the fuck people
I just want to give Noah accurate scars because god knows he probably only lived through some sort of hellish miracle
I am very curious about lightining burns as a basis for injury, particularly in terms of long term semi-cosmetic injury.
I don't know if this will bug you, but due to magic system I'll probably pick through the symptoms and only pick some, due to magic helping to handle all that energy. If that bugs you feel free to ignore this.
Ah, no problem; you’re not bugging me. :)
CW: This contains detailed information about lightning strikes as well as death mentions
(The part about burns themselves is at the end, in case you wanna read that first.)
…
How to Prevent Injury:
- Lightning injuries can be prevented by keeping low (staying off hills, crouching, etc.) but not too low — laying flat on the ground during a storm is a very bad idea.
- Keep away from tall plants and overhangs; do not stand under them. “Under the spreading chestnut tree, I fried you, and you fried me.”
- Water is the enemy; get the f*ck out of, and away from it
- Get indoors if you can
The Initial Strike:
- Lightning strikes for only a fraction of a second (specifically 1/10 to 1/100 of a second); so your character probably won’t know what hit them until a little later
- Direct lightning strikes to a person’s body are very rare; but they can happen.
- Most lightning injuries are caused by touching a struck object, or by being in close proximity to a lightning strike (by either side splash (exactly what it sounds like) or by current travelling through the ground and into the person).
- The detrimental effects of electric shock can be reduced if a person is wearing working shoes with electric shock-resistant soles. These stop the current from travelling from the person into the ground, preventing the formation of a full circuit. (I have a pair; they’re Sketchers and they’re very comfy.)
- Electrical shock can disrupt the electrical activity of the heart; and thereby sudden death from said heart disruptions can occur, which is how electric chairs work and I’m gonna stop myself right there
Anyway…
- People can be thrown by lightning strikes and be injured that way too. Have fun with this. Go wild.
- Most people survive being struck; but direct strikes can cause chronic pain, cognitive disabilities, and depression, among other things.
- Direct strikes can also cause paralysis (temporary and permanent)
.
Lightning Burns:
- Lightning itself is not hot, but the energy coming from it can heat things up to as much as twice the temperature of the surface of the sun... Mighty powerful, my dudes.
- Indirect strikes can give people weird, branch-like patterns called Lichtenberg figures. These are temporary (in most cases, they go away in 24-48 hours), and they could blister the next day, as opposed to immediately after
- Here’s an article on the above about a man who was struck indirectly by lightning
- Direct strikes completely incapacitate the victim; knocking them unconscious, throwing them a distance. The person’s body may smoke or be lit on fire; so these burns will likely be permanent.
- These can also bear a “branch-like” pattern, but are generally less “intricate,” I guess
- Burns from direct strikes are influenced by the type of clothing the person is wearing, and any metal on them or in their pockets (electricity follows the path of least resistance)
- Here is an article on the above about a man who was struck directly by lightning
Hello, this may be a dumb question but are there various degrees of electrical burns? And what signifies a first degree electrical burn versus a third degree electrical burn?
Hey nonny! This is absolutely NOT a dumb question, thank you for asking it!
Electrical burns are tricky, because the energy passes THROUGH the body, not across the surface. Remember that electricity is always seeking ground -- and if the fastest way is through your character, well... Zzzzzap!!
Electrical or lightning burns are always considered a life threatening injury because the path that electricity took through the body can be unpredictable, so it's very hard to tell what's actually injured.
Electrical burns will also have an entry wound and an exit wound, and they will smell. The area around the hole will generally be blackened or sooty.
Often, the major things that will get damaged are muscles, nerves, and the heart -- remember that the heart is a mechanical pump, driven by a complex electrical system, and that electrocutions can cause metal arrhythmias even if there aren't any burns.
So: most electrical burns have a core of third degree burns, but it tends to be a smaller area in an unpredictable path.

Zurii had been staring at the unconscious demon for the past few minutes, a part of him wanted to help and make sure he was okay. However, the thought of being inches away from the demon sent a shiver down his spine. As it was, his wings barely stopped twitching, his feathers felt like they had been flared up for hours.
He glared at Sean, watching the man lock a similar chain around Ravana's ankle that would effectively trap him here. The man stood up as he finished and approached Zurii, a cruel smile on his face.
"I'm sure Dr. Isaac can't wait to test some of his theories on you two."
----------------------------
His body tensed up, each joint locking in its position, refusing to release. Then his body went limp, ragged, aching breaths forcing their way out of his lungs.
Dr. Isaac's eyes lit up as he watched the scene unfold, quickly writing down the findings in his journal. He turned to Sean and nodded, excited to watch the scene play out again. Sean smiled, almost too excitedly as he adjusted the power on the battery and flipped the switch again.
The jumper cables attached to each of his wings sent another strong jolt of electricity through his body, his wings stiffened as a choked scream left his lips. Every feather felt like it was aflame, overwhelming his body to a point where he could barely remember to breathe.
The chains on his wrists and ankle didn't do much to help his situation, it only served to burn his skin, making it red to the point that the smell of his flesh burning filled his nose. The feeling was what he could only imagine being banished to the Abyss felt like, an intense burning sensation that couldn't be stopped.
The battery was shut off again and Sean knelt down beside the captive angel, taking the being's chin in his hand.
"Ready to cooperate?" Sean asked flatly.
"Ya…. You think… thi..nk… I'll break from that??... turn…. Turn it up." Zurii managed to challenge with a small grin.
Sean and the Doctor exchanged an annoyed look before the battery was turned to its highest setting. The soft click of the switch being flipped was drowned out by a raw anguished scream.
Ravana was just waking up, his head pounding from being slammed into the ground. His head was foggy from all of it and he couldn't help but feel disoriented by the gray concrete floor. He tried to remember exactly what happened, he knew he had been summoned to earth.
The demon pushed himself up on weak arms, his head spinning and vision blurring almost immediately. As he took a moment to regain focus his head finally registered a burning sensation. It was dull as he first noticed it, but as he really paid attention to it the burning only felt worse.
Soon his leg felt like it had been set aflame, something he was used to, but this was worse. He turned his head quickly to find the source of his pain, his vision spiraling into blurred grays. Ravana managed to squint and see a chain wrapped around his leg, he groaned and reached out and wrapped his fingers around it to pull it off.
His hand jerked back away from the burn of the metal, a scowl forming on his face that showed off his sharp teeth.
"Why does it have to be silver?..." He muttered to himself.
His grumbling was interrupted by the door to the basement opening, an overwhelming itching sensation crawling under his skin began. Ravana watched as Sean and Dr.Isaac entered the basement, the completely limp form of the angel over Sean's shoulder. The taller man carelessly dumped the angel onto the concrete, a tangle of feathers that landed with a thump.
"Don't you worry, Ravana. You're next for a little testing. We'll come back to retrieve you, don't go anywhere." Sean taunted as he reattached the chain to Zurii's ankle.
As they left, the demon could smell smoke, different from the burning smell from his leg. He inched a bit closer to the limp… dead? angel, curiosity getting the best of him so much so that he could just ignore the itchy feeling.
The tips of Zurii's feathers smoldered softly, singed and blackened from whatever the pair of humans had done to him. As Ravana looked closer he could just barely make out the feathers twitching from his presence. A tiny bit of relief crossed his mind, relief that the angel wasn't dead, but why did he care?
He folded his wings tightly against his back again, finding comfort in the feeling. Now the worry set in as he waited to see what the humans were planning to do to him. If it was anything bad, he was likely to end up like the angel. Or worse.
Idk if there's anyone stalking my google searches, but if there is, I feel really bad for them.
In the past 2 days alone, I've gone from googling how to use autoCAD, to torture methods, how to treat electrical burns, how to make earplugs out of toilet paper and now traditional marriage vows.
