Project ideas for students pursuing electrical and electronic engineering degree
When I was pursuing my electrical and electronic engineering degree a few years back, the one thing that I would fret about was the projects I was assigned to do. In almost every college offering electrical engineering courses, students need to do projects.
Though I was not a big fan of projects during my college days, it cannot be denied that they are an effective way of learning about the subject. Projects do not only reinforce various engineering concepts but also open up different career opportunities. These projects can challenge your knowledge and if you choose the right project topics, you might even get potential employers interested.
If you are pursuing electrical engineering education at the moment, here are some project ideas for you -
· Electronic instruments – Your project can be based on electronic instruments which measure voltage, current, air pressure, air flow, temperature etc. If you want to work on this project, you need to have sound knowledge of linear integrated circuit operation, techniques of microcontroller design and sensor. I had done a project on electronic instruments while I was in college and I was required to design circuits with operational amplifiers, digital-to- analogue converters, analogue-to-digital converters etc. Further, I needed to interface the microcontroller and also programme the microcontroller to make it work with electric components. I needed to use sensors for converting measurement which the electronic circuits could process as well as display. · Battery chargers – Designing and constructing battery chargers need sound knowledge of the operation and specification of batteries. A well designed charger will include undercurrent protection and undervoltage. The circuit components which are used in battery chargers come with power transistors, microcontroller, analogue-to-digital converters, operational amplifiers and pulse width modulator. Generally, microcontroller with built-in electronic circuitry is used for designing a battery charger.
· LED lighting control system - LED lighting control system is a simple engineering project and it will produce results that you can see. A basic and simple LED lighting control system needs a few LEDs, few wires, a small battery and a switch while a complex system has microcontrollers. In a complex system, you will have to programme the microcontroller so that it turns on and off at specific times. You can work on a light show project, it will not only stretch your imagination but also help you to develop and hone your microcontroller design skills.
When I was in college, two of my closet friends worked on solar power inverters and bicycle computers. You can opt for these topics for your project as well.
Summary – When you pursue your electrical and electronic engineering degree, you will need to complete quite a few projects. These projects help you to expand your knowledge on a plethora of engineering topics and also draw the interest of potential employers. This blog offers a few ideas to students who need to decide on topics for their next engineering project.
