The recurring elements of Bong’s cinema achieve their finest level: incredibly riveting from the very first frame to the last second, Parasite is a seamless blend of film genres - dark comedy, drama and thriller - becoming a political pamphlet to denounce classism without never being pedantic, moreover the satirical tone is used to describe in a sharp, dry way the obsessions and disillusions of younger generations, as shown in various moments of the story. The South Korean director handles his craft masterfully, from the screenplay to the camera work, from the music choice to the set design, proving that he has reached the top level of maturity both in substance and formal power. The stone and the water acquire a figurative meaning, especially the latter as a metaphor of the vertical condition of this everlasting leap between the rich and the poor; this is underlined in one of the most beautiful scenes of the movie. Nevertheless the ambiguity of the title is definitely the hotspot of the story, which opens to different interpretations. Parasites live underground without being noticed, they remain in the shadow while you’re sleeping, feeding on your blood. But in this contemporary capitalist society who are the actual parasites?
