A Review on Nerve Conduction Studies by Homa Mohseni Kouchesfahani in SJPBS in Lupinepublishers
Electrophysiological measurements are indispensable tool for investigating the functional integrity of peripheral nerves in both clinical and laboratory environments. Nerve conduction study is a property of both the axons and myelin sheath. The nerve conduction velocity is highly dependent on rapid signal propagation enabled by myelination. The compound motor action potential (CMAP) which correlates with the number of functional axons is an indicator for axonal damage when significantly reduced. Because nerve conduction velocity (NCV) is sensitive to both myelin sheath and axonal changes, it is an excellent measure of the function of the peripheral nervous system. Nerve conduction studies may be diagnostically helpful in patients suspected of having almost any peripheral nervous system disorder including disorders of nerve roots, peripheral nerves, muscle and neuromuscular junction. Cranial nerves and spinal cord function may also be assessed. Here, we mentioned the components and properties of nerve conduction study.

Electrophysiological Study - Cardiac Electrophysiology
A cardiac electrophysiological study is a diagnostic test for patients who have or may have alterations of the heart beat (arrhythmias).
It is performed with the patient having fasted, conscious though sedated and lying down. The local anaesthesia is applied in the area of the skin where the puncture shall be made (groin, arm or neck), so that the exploration will not be painful. Several catheters (very fine, long and flexible cables) are introduced through the veins or arteries in these areas, directing them to the heart using radioscopic control. Catheters are used to permanently record the electrical activity of the heart from inside, but they are also used as pacemakers when they are connected to an external stimulating device. Sometimes it is necessary to administer a drug during the test in order to improve the diagnosis of the arrhythmia. The duration of the study is variable, and you must remain in bed for several hours afterwards.
It allows us to discover the type and seriousness of the arrhythmias, the place in the heart where they are caused and the disorders that they produce. It is also used to better focus the treatment that must be applied.
