i haven’t actually researched it but off the top of my head those are the sports that are most subsidized by schools at all levels which means there aren’t nearly as many monetary barriers as in hockey/baseball/soccer/etc which are mostly played on travel/private teams that have a fee to play and require providing your own equipment

yeah, and i was thinking of how historically after the great migration, black people were forced to move into poorer neighborhoods because at the time it was all they could afford. even in more recent times (like 50s and 60s) black people were forced into smaller neighborhoods by pressure from state governments/white people, thus keeping them in those small, poorer areas. this relates to sports because, basketball and football were sports that were easily accessible. all you need to play basketball is a ball and a hoop, and football you need even less than that. whereas hockey, you need padding, sticks, skates, etc. and not to mention the availability to ice. its more of a class thing than anything, but the effects of systemic racism has kept predominantly black people in the lower class. usually upper and middle class white people spent their time going to the movies, getting food with their friends, while black kids in poorer neighborhoods were playing a game of pickup or football because it was cheaper and easily accessible to them. and, that bball/fb is a gateway to a lot of black kids to university through scholarships, and is their “ticket out” of poverty. some may argue that they can “work hard” to get to uni and be successful, however, schools in black neighborhoods are underfunded (due to the systemic racism), leading to a lower-quality education that what the white people in upper and middle class neighborhoods would get. so to say that the reason that there are less black athletes in the nhl is because white people are better is wrong (and racist lol), because you would have to take into account the systematic and socioeconomic factors that are barring them from playing hockey
