Mean Girls on West End

It's very fun, but ever so slightly lacklustre (I know I'm not the first person to say that about this musical but eh whatever).

IDK how thought-through casting Gretchen and Karen as WOC while Regina and Cady are white are, but it worked for me! Added an interesting layer to the dynamics, especially with Gretchen. 'What's Wrong With Me?', I've seen palyed for laughs, but this production made it absolutely heartbreaking and she very much made her natural hair a part of it with 'my body, my face, my hair'. BABY.

Pretty sad that they cut the Plastics medley verse in Meet the Plastics - it's such a brilliant little piece of songwriting and I absolutely love it as a trope in musicals :( Also, they cut the whole of Fearless, Do This Thing and the first Stupid with Love (OK I guess :/) but also Stop! Criminal. Damian was an absolute scene-stealer and deserved to have that kept in. I guess they wanted to make the second half shorter but c'mon!

Finally, Janice was brilliant and adorable. They did a good job of making her look truly an outsider and a weird little lesbian with a mullet and a giant T-shirt and funky awkward dance moves. It worked a lot better than the objectively stunning and graceful Auli'i Cravalho, in my opinion. Like yeah, don't tone down the reasons why she's bullied and celebrate her being herself anyway!

At least in this brief scene, Elena’s Éponine definitely seems about as close to the novel’s Éponine as the musical allows. From the beginning as she sits with her shoulders hunched, playing with the end of her skirt and kicking her leg back and forth, she seems like a genuine, wild and restless street rat, not a prettified version of one. Her brash demeanor with Marius only enhances the impression, especially when she shoves him from behind to get his attention in a way that no well-bred 19th century girl would ever do. Her range of emotions is effective and seems Hugo-accurate too: from the stab of pain and frustration in her voice on “Look what’s become of me,” to the cheerful, teasing front she immediately puts on when Marius arrives, to how very quiet she becomes on “No, I don’t want your money, sir,” to the way she quickly shakes off that brief lapse and affects her brash smile again until after Marius leaves.

Toby’s Marius seems more Hugoesque than other musical Marii too, despite not having black hair. While he might be a bit kinder and less aloof than Hugo’s Marius, he definitely has a gentlemanly dignity and doesn’t seem to treat Éponine as a best friend. The tone of his “Éponine, find her for me!” sounds more like an order than a plea, although he becomes more pleading as the scene goes on, and the stern way he grabs her arms on “‘Ponine, I’m lost until she’s found!” brings to mind Hugo’s Marius shaking Éponine when he makes her promise not to give Cosette’s address to her father.

The tempo of the scene feels slightly rushed, but only slightly.
