Elevated Work Platform Training Can Help You Operate Hi-rail EWPs
Elevated work platforms are used in diverse industrial sectors, and the rail transport industry is no exception. A lot of infrastructural developmental work in the railway transport sector requires skilled professionals to handle them. These tasks involve using heavy machines, sophisticated tools and well-trained professionals. Therefore, well-designed elevated work platform training can also be helpful in this sector, given its wide-ranging benefits.
What is meant by a hi-rail EWP?
It is known to all that EWP stands for Elevated Work Platform. An EWP platform can be lifted to a certain height and lowered conveniently so that operators can perform their work. It makes it easy to reach the otherwise hard-to-access places or transfer equipment from one level to another.
EWP is an absolute term that comprises machines like boom lifts, telescopic lifts, and scissor lifts. A hi-rail EWP is an elevated platform designed to operate on roads and railways. The terms ‘hi-rail’ is just a combination of ‘highway’ and ‘rail’.
Is a licence required to operate it?
An operator must hold a licence to maneuver an EWP with a boom length of more than 11 metres. The required licence is a WP High-Risk Work (HRW) licence issued by a Work Health and Safety Regulator. However, boom lifts under 11 metres and all other elevated work platforms do not require the operator to hold a licence.
However, the employees who are supposed to handle these platforms must still be able to show proof of training or accreditation. Most operators obtain this training course by undergoing a Yellow Card course. A Yellow Card is a nationally recognised licence that is issued by the Elevating Work Platform Association of Australia. Considering the type of EWP needed for a particular task and its size, operators must consider an elevated work platform training course.
Difference between wet and dry hi-rail EWP hire
Only a qualified operator can operate a wet hire service with the hi-rail EWP. While, if you choose to dry hire a hi-rail EWP, you must operate the machine yourself or look for an operator.
