Minnesota has a large ethnically Scandinavian population, so whenever summer occurs you start seeing elf doors appear on a some of the trees.

The elf live behind a small elf door that you place in your home. They lose their magical powers when they are seen by humans. That's why they spend most of their time behind the elf door and only come out at night to carry out their pranks, help in the gnome workshop or get up to other mischief.

S’quite charming. Strangely enough or not, I’ve not seen one appear in a neighborhood where people aren’t happy with one another.

Elf Door at Lake Harriet

Minneapolis, Minnesota

This hollow ash tree along the south shore of Lake Harriet, closest to the end of Queen Avenue, is home to an elf named Mr. Little Guy. For about two dozen years he’s lived here behind this door in its various states of repair. Visitors leave him gifts, trinkets, offerings, food, flowers, and letters. If someone leaves a return address, Mr. Little Guy has been known to write back to his fans. I used to live on Queen Avenue, about a block south of here. It was always fun to visit to see what other people leave for the local tree spirit.

We have been totally taken over by the Elf on the Shelf tradition in our household. Over the last two years we have had many different situations that our Elf ‘Elfie’ has gotten himself into and this year is going to be no different.

In the morning the boys will wake up to our biggest Elf on the Shelf situation to date.
