3. Did they have a good childhood? What are fond memories they have of it? Whatâs a bad memory?
Rhoda didnât have a wonderful childhood. The middle sibling of five, she always felt as if she didnât really exist in her family. Someone else was always the best at everything, or the youngest and cutest, or the clan favourite. Her parents were not very involved in her upbringing (she was never even sure who her father was, and her mother died when she was young.)
Nevertheless, her siblings were a close and sometimes volatile unit. Her oldest brother Colm is the one she has the steadiest and best relationship with; heâs always been a guide and parent figure for her. Colm is the one who taught her all the skills parents should teach, and she remembers learning to fish and cook and sew (badly) from him. She had a complex, very close but explosive relationship with her second brother, who was two years older than her, but when she was nineteen he was killed by a bear on a hunting expedition. Rhoda, the only mage in the group, was the only one who technically could have saved him, but she was unable to and blames herself extremely for this. Her younger siblings and some of her clan also openly blame her for the incident. Rhoda, never a very responsible sibling, became ever more unhappy and rebellious once her brotherâs death shifted more responsibility in the family onto her; this was a large part of the reason for her leaving the clan.
10. Do they like children? Do children like them? Do they have or want any children? What would they be like as a parent? Or as a godparent/babysitter/etc?
Rhoda secretly likes children a lot more than she lets on. She likes to have fun with them and let out the childish side of her nature; sheâs always up for tree climbing or playing ball games with kids. Older children are more her thing than younger children, though- sheâll probably freak out if asked to hold a baby or look after a toddler. Anyone over five she can probably manage ok, and the kid will either love her or be terrified of her. Sheâd also probably be better at comforting an upset child than she or anyone else thinks; sheâs got a no-nonsense approach but she does care a lot.
I think with the right person Rhoda would be open to the idea of having one or two children. She wouldnât be a perfect mother but she would try very, very hard not to repeat her familyâs mistakes, and she would also try very, very hard to hide how difficult it was.
18. Whatâs their favourite genre of: books, music, tv shows, films, video games and anything else
Rhoda loves action and adventure stories that lift her out of the boredom of her day-to-day life when sheâs having a bad time. Her music taste is varied and she is embarrassed about some of it, so sheâd probably tell you she likes ârock and things,â but in fact she ranges to softer, more romantic genres too; she wonât read or watch pure romance because it bores her but gets much more invested in sappy stories than sheâd like you to believe. Similarly, she has a secret love for things like lullabies and traditional folk that give her a link to her roots.
22. What are their favourite insults to use? What do they insult people for? Or do they prefer to bitch behind someoneâs back?
Sheâs most likely to get into a full-on insult war with someone who talks shit about elves or her friends/ family, and she will never do it behind their back- if she has a problem with you, youâll know it. When she insults you sheâs a mixture of eloquent and dirty; she likes to use long words that confound her opponent, but she also likes to swear a lot.
38. What do they admire in others? What talents do they wish they had?
She really admires conviction and intelligence, political engagement and the willingness to argue without making it personal (this is most likely to earn you her friendship since she most easily builds relationships on this sort of adversarial behaviour).
Really, she doesnât like falsity; she can detect it and is put off by it, particularly if itâs not done well. She doesnât like people who shy away from arguments for the sake of being âniceâ when clearly they feel strongly. Anyone who is being themselves will earn her respect. But above all, she admires gentleness and kindness and is fascinated by people who are quiet and retiring and just being themselves. She is unwilling to show any emotion that might make her appear weak and is amazed and enchanted with those who can, even more so if they are gentle towards her.
In terms of talents she admires musical skill (she has none whatsoever). She is also very likely to be impressed by achievements such as someone fitting eight golf balls into their mouth at once, sticking their hand into a beehive, etcâŠ
