Well, yeah... he'd die otherwise, right? 

Granted, it wasn't very often he'd get a full meal. Often he'd eat energy foods like potions and milk just to keep going when stuff got tough. But whenever he visited a town or city, he'd stop and find something real to eat. For free, most of the time.

As a kid, he totally played the pity card and acted pitiful and starving. Worked every time. 

When he was older people slowly started realizing what he was and gave him free meals and stuff to help him out. 

Basically, he could stop at any house and totally rob them and get away with it, hehehe!
