Justin’s steps were hollow as he followed the stranger back towards the school. His legs felt so stiff and weighed down it was a chore to lift them to even step over the unkempt grass. He teetered on his feet from time to time but didn’t fall, a master at staying on them by now, an underwhelming but necessary skill to have when the only thing you ever felt now was tired. He felt that muscle strain ease off some as they left the grass and touched down on concrete, approaching the doors and the people inside.
Justin swallowed meatily, hands buried deep in his hoodie pockets, unsure but too tired to think about it as he stepped over the threshold and turned his eyes around, squeezing them every so often when they roamed across boards adorned with brightly colored paper that stung at his retinas. Justin sniffed loudly, head moving with his eyes, staring more at people’s shoes and the pattern of the floor than anything else. Until he raised his chin just slightly to look down the hall, and laid his eyes on something entirely different.
A man. Just a man with a beard. But he stared because the features around it were familiar and it felt good to look at them and reminisce. Yeah, Justin saw something in that posture, in that gaunt throat, the beady eyes and dark hair. The...nose, even. The forehead. He twitched and stared past those features, then at all of them, and stared some more.
