Unfortunately for him, his father makes him feel very weak. He can hear his father and his sister shouting in the other room. She’s crying while she spills forth pleading apologies for something that was his fault. He let her take the blame, choosing to hide in here, in the safety of his room instead. When their father was angry, he didn’t really care who was truly at fault, so long as he had a target.
A small part of Dier says he should go in there and help Eliane get out. It was his fault she was getting in trouble. But he can’t bring himself to do it. He tells himself that when he’s in trouble she never comes to help him, so he’s justified in leaving her to their father. He wonders if she tells herself the same thing when he’s the one crying for help.
He’s gripped by a fear so strong, he wonders if it’s natural. Surely it can’t be. It Pulls at his hesitance, his doubt, his selfishness, his self-preservation. Stay out of this, boy, that feeling seems to say, and he can hear his father’s voice saying the words in his mind. You’ll only make things worse if you try to interfere. Leave her to get what she deserves. She’ll be the one hiding when it’s you.
So he stays and hides and abandons Eliane to her fate yet again. Because he’s weak, and Dier Cass hates feeling weak.
Dier Cass is nineteen years old, and he finally understands.
All his life he’s heard that Allomancy is power. That his father deserves to get what he wants using his Allomancy simply because he has it. He’s been told that he is the pathetic thing upon which Allomancers tread and he needs to get used to it. It has been hammered into him every moment of his life that the strong have the right to abuse the weak.
And in that one, perfect moment, it all just Snapped into place.
A surge of power, feeling that ability to fight back fill him. Beautiful blue lines, bright and anchored to his chest like lifelines. Keeping him safe. He never has to fear again. A metal paperweight turned weapon. He’s covered in blood, but it’s over. It is finally over, forever. Never again. Never again. His father is slumped on the floor, never to rise again. A just end for him, Dier thinks. A fitting reward for the one time that he pushed his son too far.
He turns, and she’s standing there. Eliane’s face is a mask of horror, staring at him like he’s a monster. For a moment, he hesitates, wondering if he’s just made a mistake. Murder is a serious crime, and he’s just committed patricide. He can feel the fear starting to creep back in.
She’s wrong. She doesn’t understand. What it feels like. She’s not an Allomancer. How could she understand? How dare she accuse him with that look. How dare her eyes judge him for doing what needed to be done? He’d just saved them! They’d both wanted to do it all of their lives, and he’d finally been given the ability to do so!
She takes a step backward, and he realizes that if she tells anyone what he’s done, they’ll arrest him. They’d lock him up for this, and he can’t be trapped again. He’s an Allomancer now. He deserves to get what he wants doesn’t he?
She sees the change in his demeanor and she turns and runs, fleeing for her life. For her life? Are you really going to kill her? Your own sister, Dier? In that moment, he realizes he would, if it comes down between his freedom and Eliane. She’s never helped him all these years when he needed her. He owes her nothing.
She gets away. He’s trying to use powers he doesn’t fully understand and he’s clumsy with them. But she won’t get away for long. He’ll find her. He’ll make sure she doesn’t talk.
Dier Cass has finally understood, and he’s not letting her take this away from him.
Dier Cass is twenty-one years old, and he lashes out without thinking.
An argument in the street with a stranger, when he’d felt that touch on his emotions. Something he hadn’t felt in years. The man was trying to get him to calm down. Pushing down on his aggression, his offense, his will to start a fight.
He’s grabbing a handful of his Allomancer’s coins and flings them through the air before he fully knows what he’s doing. The man’s placating words cut off in a strangled gasp of surprise as the shining projectiles take him down. Dier freezes, watching as the man falls to the ground and stops breathing. What had he just done?
His first kill since… his father. But that had been borne of years of hatred, a deep-seated loathing for an entire childhood of abuse. This? He didn’t even know this man. This had been… instinct. What did it say about him that his instincts were lethal? For a moment, he wonders if he should feel bad about this.
He decides not. The world is better off without one more Soother, whether or not he’d acted on instinct or consciously has nothing to do with it. He’s making connections and these new friends of his might require him to do worse than this. The Yomens are a powerful family and with the way Ferra has been looking at him lately, he has a feeling he needs to get used to following orders. That girl has plans to use him; he can see it in her eyes.
He decides he doesn’t mind that either. Telling someone such as Ferra Yomen ‘no’ is simply not done. He can be whatever she’d like, and it’ll be worth it. Dier Cass has a feeling that he’s going to enjoy this.
Dier Cass is twenty-four years old, and he hears rumors of the informant.
Eliane Casuana? It’s far too close to be coincidence. Rumors say she’s about the right age as well. Could it be that after years of searching, after pretty much giving up on ever finding her, he’s stumbled across her by accident?
He stops by the coffee shop, staying out of sight as he watches her through the windows. Little Ellie has grown up in the last five years, but it’s definitely her. An informant? And a rather skilled one at that, if his source is correct. He follows her home over the rooftops, watching to see where she goes. How can he use this information? Is she still so skittish around Allomancers?
The next night he breaks in through her window, leaving it open. A misty night, a fortuitous sign. The mists spin around him as he walks through her apartment. They pull away slightly as well, but they always do that when he’s got metalfire in his system. Her computer isn’t difficult to break, though many of the files are encrypted. He takes them, reading over the ones which are not protected at all.
He’s been thinking about the name, and he’s almost upset with her for figuring out that they could take a new last name before he did. Casuana. It’s got a nice ring to it. Cass always seemed too crude for him. His mother left that name behind. Why shouldn’t he and Eliane do so as well? Yes. He likes it quite a bit.
The door starts to open, and he smiles, preparing himself for one hell of a family reunion. Five years is a long time, but he’s sure she’s nothing he can’t handle. He’s come prepared. This ought to be fun.
He holds the steel before him and lets it fly to greet his sister. Dier Casuana thinks the expression on her face is absolutely priceless.
