So I’m assuming anon was asking about the scene where Oliver walks in on Elio and then talks through a teddy bear to ask him what’s wrong... if I’m mistaken, let me know!

it's not in the movie tho
@katemattias - it is in the film, just without the bear :) that’s why I wondered if anon wanted to know how the film adapted it.

I'm not anon but I'd love to know how it's done in the movie
@elioeoliver - it’s basically the same as the book, but without Oliver using the bear to ask Elio what’s wrong :)
(cut for spoilers)
No one is home, Elio is having some alone time and just as he really gets into it, Oliver returns from wherever he’s been and asks him why he’s not out with the others (just asks him himself without trying to talk through the bear). Elio sort of stumbles his way through the conversation - says he has a bad allergy, Oliver suggests that he has the same one. Elio is trying not to draw attention to what Oliver just walked in on, pretending he was just reading, but Oliver then suggests that they go swimming and tries to pull Elio up from the bed, which he resists for obvious reasons. He asks if they have to go right away, and even though Oliver knows by this point why Elio doesn’t want to get up right away, why he’s brought his knees to his chest and stubbornly stays where he is, he’s pretty insistent that they go swimming right away. Oliver leaves to go to his room and Elio throws himself back on the bed quite violently in frustration with himself, some embarrassment maybe. They then get changed, Elio watches Oliver change for a moment and they go swimming.
You don’t see anything more graphic than Elio’s hand down his boxers, so no obvious wet spots or anything like it was described in the book. I think they played it that Oliver saw what he was doing when he walks in because he bursts in so suddenly and it makes me laugh that it actually takes Elio a tiny split second too late to grab the book and pretend he’s reading it, but also in place of a more graphic and obvious demonstration of what has happened, Elio’s reluctance to get up and the way he draws his knees up to his chest to hide himself is more than enough indication for us to believe Oliver knows exactly what’s going on.
