On This Day in History August 3, 1811: Elisha Graves Otis (August 3, 1811 - April 8, 1861) was born in Halifax, Vermont. Otis did not invent the elevator but arguably more importantly he created the safety device that prevents the elevator from falling if the hoisting cables fail.

The Otis Elevator company was founded by Elisha Otis 160 years ago. The way we go up and down buildings wouldn’t be the same if it wasn’t for Elisha Otis.
