Loose Ends (WIP)

In the end-of-campaign chaos that was a divine intervention mishap bringing everyone who had ever been nice to the party to Edwina’s doorstep, one of my fellow players mentioned her character from a past campaign there as well, making it Officially, Irrefutably Canon. Since her character and mine were practically inseparable, that means that my girl, sweet old half-orc now-granny Elissandra, would almost certainly have been there as well.

Thanks to some time travel shenanigans, young Ellie found Edwina’s will, over fifty years before it was written. It stuck with her. And now, half a lifetime later, she finds herself teleported to the home of a person she thought to have died long ago.

Hhhhhhh anyways this is leading up to a conversation between Ellie and Edwina, because I have Feelings. But here’s the only part of the wip I’m happy with right now, Ellie’s flashback after hearing the name. 

Content warning for implied suicidal ideation below the cut. (Edwina’s will was primarily a farewell note, and while it is not quoted in this excerpt, Ellie recognized the tone). 

Ellie remembered a tree, twisted and hostile, corrupting the island she and her siblings had called home. She remembered a long trek through the jungle, desperate measures taken to keep her family alive, knowing that before this was over they would discover her secret. She remembered a corridor in the heart of the tree, lined with balls of light. 

Ever-curious, they had of course investigated, and found them to contain memories. Memories of tragedies past. A slain unicorn. A dwarven woman slipping into the void, no one left to care about her. And one that contained a single piece of paper--one that read like a suicide note. Signed Edwina Pennington.

She had tucked in away in her blouse then, deep in her own self-destructiveness as she was. Somehow it had survived all the blood and violence that ensued, and so she had kept it. If nothing else, to keep alive the memory of the person who was probably long gone. She set it in a wooden box with mother-of-pearl overlays, and kept it in the very back of the drawer by her bedside. A reminder of what she herself had almost succumbed to.

That had been over fifty years ago.
