Does anyone else dunk their biscuits in a glass of orange squash, or am I completely on my own here? Malted milks and orange squash just work, somehow.
Balint in México: Round 3.5
A little backstory on Balint! Why did our little Hungarian begin his boxing journey…?
…….
So for a quick history lesson, in most communist countries during the Cold War (and Cuba until 2022), professional boxing was banned. In Hungary, it was banned until 1989. This is part of the reason why I think Mori had Volg be an amateur boxer who had only recently turned pro, because our lil guy legally couldn’t until 1991.
Similarly, Balint turned the amateur route with no hopes for professional boxing until much later. Hungary’s most famous boxer and Balint’s personal idol, László Papp, was able to box professionally through a loophole by training in Austria. He won Hungary 3 Olympic gold medals, but was never able to win a world title (he was offered a world title match against Sandy Randy, but the gov in Hungary wouldn’t give him the exit visa and the match never happened).
So, when the ban was lifted in 1989 (Balint was 15) he trained hard so he could earn his pro boxing license in the next years and has made it his mission to win Hungary a world title.
Because of the timeframe of the manga (it’s 2000 now, right?) Hungary didn’t have any world titles yet at the time; they have two (3?) now; Erdei earned two in the late 2000s and one guy in 2001 won a title defense I think.
Balint doesn’t really have any sad backstory, he truly is a happy-go-lucky guy. He lived an average life in Hungary in an average apartment. His mom is a nurse, his father works in construction, his sister currently studies business in Vienna. His family does have a few doubts about his career, but support him either way. Boxing gives Balint the excitement he didn’t previously have in his life before and he loves it very dearly with all of his heart.
…..
(TLDR) Baby Balint became infatuated with boxing when he was young and wants to take his country to the world stage.
Fun fact, Balint did ballet when he was younger!
He is also a southpaw
