Michel, Cassandre, Google et les autres Mixed Media Installation Guillaume Slizewicz, An Mertens, Gijs De Heij Constant, Brussels 2021 Is it possible for algorithms to read a poetic story in an archive of news articles on digital surveillance, updated daily by the same person for fifteen years? Can algorithms read the story of the creators' database while parsing it? Together with the collective Algolit, we investigated these questions using e-traces, the database maintained by artist Michel Cleempoel. The answers are a source of inspiration for poetic and visual literary creations visible in Constant's window and on this link.
Reading Response Week 8
I happened to be doing some of my reading while sitting outside of Hutch with a couple of my friends. When “The Jew’s Daughter” and “The Dream Life of Letters” came up, I showed it to them and they watched with me as I clicked through or was held hostage by the Flash. One of my friends responded to each of these (especially “The Dream Life of Letters”) by saying “this isn’t poetry, this ignores the fundamental idea of poetry.” My friend, an intrepid scholar of poetry just finishing up a BA on the New York School poets, did not have a problem with the language (or lack thereof) or the experimental form. She did not have a problem with it in any of the ways people have a problem with “experimental” poets, like Aram Saroyan. Her problem was that, for her, the basis of poetry was that it could be consumed any where, in any condition and this – which required flash and a computer, limited that and dictated a single experience of it.
I don’t know if I agree with my friend but I thought that she posed an interesting question (and answered several of the wreading response questions quite succinctly) that I’ve still been processing. She responded poorly to the work. I quite liked “The Jew’s Daughter” and didn’t particularly like “The Dream Life of Letters” but found myself unable to look away, which made me feel as if it was at least somewhat compelling (my friend, ever the grouch, reminded me that just because something is exciting or rouses are attention doesn’t mean it is “good”). Do specific genres demand specific viewing experiences? Is poetry portable where performance is not? What is the line here between poetry and performance art, between poetry and art, between poetry and just a blog or a website? And, do these distinctions really matter? - Ryn

Liberamente tradotto da “Literature Is Not the Same Thing as Publishing”.
