👁️ Azrae: Guardian of the Dead (Ellariel profiles 1/4)

Azrae never believed they would end up in a pair-bond with anyone, particularly because they don’t really like others, in general. And then there’s the fact that they’re the only surviving Ellariel from the Fifth Generation, a fact that’s very good at alienating them from all other Ellariel.

Thing is, then Iuri happened (who liked them back, despite being their perfect opposite in character and everything else), and now they’ve been in a very loving relationship for a few thousand years and can’t even imagine what it was like before. Azrae and Iuri aren’t the only Ellariel who are more than a “business arrangement”, but they’re definitely among those who care about each other the most.

Apart from all that, due to them being the closest this world has to a death god, Azrae knows a lot more about the truths of existence than anyone else, and is something of a wild card, only loyal to themself and Iuri. You can never be entirely sure about their intentions.

Ava is the first human child the two of them have Bonded in a long time.

Ellariel are vaguely humanoid basically immortal entities with certain shape-shifting abilities from a non-physical realm adjacent to the physical realm. They are directly connected to the Essence, which both sustains them and gives them the basis of their (magical) abilities. Ellariel can’t directly influence the physical world themselves, so they bond humans who can then channel the Essence, using them as a conduit. Every human is bonded to two Ellariel, who are in turn Bonded to each other: one of the Natah order (destruction) and one of the Nanaël order (creation).

👁️ Iuri: Lady of Fire (Ellariel profiles 2/4)

she/her | chaotic good | Pair-partner to Azrae | Nanaël; aligned with Mikaën

Iuri is of the Seventh Generation of Ellariel, one of many Ellariel whose particular specialization relates back to fire in some way. 

As is the case with all Ellariel, her temperament and affinity are tied inextricably together, so her personality in some way reflects the fiery nature of her abilities. She is Bonded to Azrae who’s rather drawn-back and calm (if sassy), while Iuri is the extrovert of their relationship, passionate and outgoing. She’s very positive, preferring not to let herself be pulled down by negativity, and loves Azrae very dearly, even if others might not understand why. Others’ disapproval has never held her back before, though, so she doesn’t let it drag her down now. 

Ava is the first human child Iuri and Azrae have Bonded in a long time, and since Ava’s bonded a tad “closer” to Azrae she will learn to master that aspect of her abilities first. So Iuri’s forehead eye stays closed until Ava starts learning the fire aspect...

As an additional note: The stylized eyes on Iuri’s wings can watch and blink and move... as do those on her antennae. Ellariel are distinctly not-human in an unsettling way, however much they try to hide it, even if they shift to their human-most form. And when their third eyes open, they can see through those of their bonded humans. Iuri’s third eye will be more human than her 2 normal ones are xD

👁️ Mikaën: God of Light & Order (Ellariel profiles 3/4)

1. Infinitely gentle, impossibly kind, unbearably self-loathing; loss and longing for someone he should hate marking him like a badly-healed scar

Mikaën is a Sixth Generation Ellariel -- the first Generation after the Split, which resulted in the distinction of Nanaël and Natah. While all other (still living) Generations got to Choose their alignment, the Sixth and all following were born into theirs.

He and Cireon, a Natah his age, ended up connecting over their mutual fury, which lead to them becoming pair partners and lovers as well. After a while, though, Mik realized that Cireon’s rage went much deeper than anticipated. While he shared most of her beliefs, he didn’t share nor truly understand her single-minded hatred regarding humanity. Their relationship finally escalated in a bitter conflict, and she disappeared. 

When Cireon Ascended, millennia later, their pair-bond forced him to Ascend alongside her. Mikaën unwillingly became the God of Order, and Cireon became the Goddess of Chaos, splitting the Ellariel into two more sub-factions, with the distinction that Ellariel would not be born into these but would get to choose. Except for Mikaën, of course.

Unfortunately for humanity, Cireon’s Ascension finally allowed her to achieve her ultimate goal: to trigger the Apocalypse and rid the world of the “human scourge”. By the time they managed to lock her away, almost everyone was dead, and the physical world had been changed irrevocably.

Mikaën did not take any of that very well. He’s been severely depressed ever since, but since he is a God (no matter how involuntary), he cannot die, or cease being like other Ellariel.

Ben is the first child Mikaën has Bonded in centuries because he did not want to provide Cireon with yet another tool in her various games (and Mik only did it so his closest confidant would finally shut up). Mik really likes Ben. Unfortunately, most of his fears regarding his nemesis/ex-lover are about to come true.

And the worst thing is: Most of her arguments still ring true, and really, what does that say about him?

Mikaën and Cireon are lesser Gods when compared to Eiwara and Shama’an, the original Gods of Aelaris. Thus, any Ellariel is either Nanaël or Natah and either Chaos or Order.
