Reader Scene:
>It’s cold and late at night, you’ve been walking around New Eridu having lost track of time. You’re now very tired looking aound the overcast dark streets for someplace to lay for a while.
>You can smell the rain on the air walking under some trees on the sidewalk. You shiver with the wind rushing past you, but looking across the dark street you see an alcove to a building just big enough to keep the wind off.
>You know it’s likely not a great look, but figure to only stay long enough to get your energy back. Just then you feel the first drops of rain start to pitter-patter around you.
>Quickly ducking into the entryway across the street, you sit down huddled in the corner with your backpack as a cushion.
>You readjust your layers to ensure you’re as warm as possible, keeping your head in the corner and on the bag you lay down. The feeling of exhaustion consumes you, but the cool air and the breeze carrying the of rain still reaches you, making ‘sleep’ rather difficult, but it is rest. >You’re constantly half asleep, half awake, only dreaming a few minutes at a time as the ground is still cold through your layers, and the bag is rough poor support.
Character scenes:
Rina
>Floating along after a commission is a beautiful maid, having just finished some last minute overtime with Ellen she’s quite drained, so is the younger maid.
>”Don’t worry Ellen, I can carry you if you’ve pushed too much today.” She looks down at Ellen.
>”It’s fine, I was able to sleep through most of class.” Giving a stretch and yawn she slouches slightly.
>”Oh, we best hurry, I can feel some rain starting to fall. I didn’t expect it to rain.” Rina picks up her pace.
>Rina is still mindful of her environment when passing by a little alcove sees a person laying in the corner in rough clothing.
>She instinctively stops, walking gracefully into the small alcove with her heels clicking ever so slightly on the concrete.
>You had heard some movement, but decided to ignore it opting to just try and get back to resting, though when you heard some steps getting close you almost shot up.
>Being slightly dazed, and just being pulled out of a light sleep you see a blurry figure standing at the entrance of your little space. Quickly though it comes into focus, you see it’s a maid who looks startled covering her mouth looking at you.
>”Are you ok? What are you doing out here at this hour?” She gives a concerned look while returning to a neutral stance, but not approaching.
>”I was just resting.” You give a half truth, but your tone is quite curt and defensive.
>Taking in your surroundings a bit more you see another younger maid behind her who looks almost as tired as you.
>Breaking your concentration on the girl the woman introduces herself, “I’m sorry I should have given you my name, I am head maid of Victoria Housekeeping Alexandrina Sabastine, you may call me Ms. Sebastine. Can I assist you, it’s not good for your health to be sleeping out here like this.” She takes a step forward but no more, waiting for a response. Some bangboo float around her, but she seems to ask them to stay behind her,
>Your brain still being foggy, and exhausted you sway slightly, sitting on the ground slightly dozing off each time you close your eyes a little too long, it takes some time to process her words. “Wha-? What do you mean, why would you help me, is this private property, I can just move elsewhere if needed.”
>”Oh no, you misunderstand, I’m not with this building, I’m with a different group, and when I saw you I felt I had to stop to offer some help.” She keeps her calm demeanor, but her tone does shift, becoming slightly rushed.
>It’s still hard to follow, but you do understand ‘stopped to help’ from her explanation. You can hear pitter patter of rain picking up a little outside the small alcove, taking some time to understand the situation. >The other maid had entered the shelter to avoid getting rained on, and was dozing off leaned on the wall.
>Standing up a bit shaky, Ms. Sebastine tentatively leans forward but doesn’t approach,
>“What do you want from me? Why would you want me?” You feel cold and weak from your nap.
>”It’s my duty as a maid to help people in need, and you are clearly one such person. Don’t worry about what we want from you, all we want is to help you, isn’t that right Ellen?” She looks behind her at the young shark girl.
>Realizing someone was addressing her, Ellen pushed off sluggishly from the wall, “Yeah, I haven’t seen someone in as bad straights as you since Ruby ‘accidentally’ managed to walk out of a store with expensive eye shadow.” She kind of mumbled the last part, but did show some concern too.
>”Ellen, you should be more respectful and didn’t you say you were fine having slept through your lessons today?” The young girl shifted uncomfortably at the woman's gaze. “Sorry about that, if you would like we have a building close by that is very lovely for you to stay in.”She puts her hands together with an illuminating smile.
>Though it’s rather odd to be approached by two strangers asking to help you, it’s likely a nicer proposition being at least inside a building if nothing else. “I-’ll go with then, where is it? Do we have to go through the rain?” You point out at the rain which had picked up to a steady pace.
>The bangboo which had been batting occasionally at Ellen to keep her awake made their way back to Ms. Sebastine’s side, patting them both on the head she takes a few slow steps forward to close the distance,
>“I have a colleague who I can ask for some help, I too forgot my umbrella today. Due to some last minute work, and no call for rain this evening we must wait together, but once they arrive we can take you back with us. And there you can have a nice rest.”
>She grabs both your hands in hers, giving a comforting squeeze, “Thank you for letting us help you, I know it’s not easy to trust strangers, on Victoria Housekeeping’s reputation we will do our best to assist.” She whispers just loud enough for you two to hear.
>Eventually, after sharing some mild banter with this maid, the other one just dozed off once you all sat down, a smaller maid Ms. Sebastine called Corin, ran over with a pink umbrella over her,
>With a comical assortment of umbrellas hooked on her arm as she stepped under the cover with everyone. Profusely apologizing for being so late after getting the message from Rina.
>”Don’t worry Corin, you weren’t on duty tonight, so I’m happy to see that you received the message and were able to make it.” She reached down wiping off some rain from the small girls bangs.
>She immediately straightened out her whole uniform, doing double and triple checks for issues. She then noticed Ellen and went over to talk with her.
>Meanwhile Ms. Sebastine walks over to you, handing out a hand, “Come now, y/n lets get somewhere warmer and more comfortable for you to rest.” Her soft smile, and reassuring voice draw you along with her.
>You get ready and set out, with the two girls behind you talking idly. You walk under the same umbrella Ms. Sebastine does, because, ‘it’s proper etiquette for a maid to hold the umbrella for clients.’
>It’s a peaceful walk, your umbrella is quiet as you are led along by the maid to a safe house out of the way of major foot traffic.
>With enough space for several people, and very warm, you feel your body give out a bit, the fatigue and stress from recent events hitting you like a freight train and you fall.
>Barely looking at you Head-Maid Rina almost doesn’t see you falling, but manages to catch you with her arms wrapped around your chest and waist to ease you down.
>”I am sorry, you must be very tired and I made you walk so far.” She wears a frustrated face as she sits next to you, having eased you down to the floor.
>”It’s fine, I just got very tired all of the sudden. I just need sleep.” You wearily try and stand up, with wobbly success.
>”I understand, but there’s a bath in the back, on the second floor that I think you should use, and I’ll put some clothes out for you to sleep in.” Her words are firm, but her expression is soft, tentative.
>The other two girls had made their way off to another room, Ellen seemingly was dozing off as you were walking here, so you stood in the large ornate room, adorned with green walls and dark wooden panel walls, alone.
>It was rather hard to reason arguing with this woman who’s only offering assistance, even if you are still exhausted, you’d benefit from any water over your body.
>”T-thanks, I will try and be quick. What time do I have to leave tomorrow?” You take a deep breath, feeling your body unevenly warm from fatigue.
>”Oh dear, you don’t have to worry about that. You won’t be rushed out, if you’d let me keep you here for a bit, I could reach out to some people who need work done associated with Victoria Housekeeping, so you could have a roof and some work. Even if you don’t stay long.” She floats along side you as she speaks, leading you to the bath.
>She asks that you consider it after getting some rest, leaving you at the entrance to the bathroom. She floats back down the hall quietly humming to herself.
>The bathroom has a small entryway with some small wash baskets for clothes, and a frosted glass door.
>Still being in your outside clothes, layered at that, you’re quite uneasy, getting out of the sweater and jeans, down to a t-shirt and some thin sweatpants you managed to get a bit ago.
>Opening the door you see a checkered tile room maybe twice as large as the changing room, with a very fancy shower and bath on opposite sides of the room,
>In the middle a series of wooden shelves filled with half a dozen expensive brands of every type of soap, shampoo and conditioner you could think of.
>You’re frozen in place, unable to leave since it wouldn’t make sense. But moving forward is far too intimidating to do, so you’re stuck in the doorway, worst of both worlds.
>You nearly jump when you hear a knock at the door and the maid’s voice call through, “Are you alright? I have the clothes and towels, can I come in?”
>Gripping your heart, you quickly take two steps across the room and open the door, and you see the maid instinctively look away from the crack in the door.
>”I-I’m fine, just took off some outer layers.” You see her tentatively glance your way, letting out a sigh and handing off the pile of fabrics.
>”Are you sure nothing’s the matter? Do you know which soaps to use?” There is no judgement in her voice, but the question does bite a little more than you let on.
>”Ah- um, n-not really.” You have no pride to loose here, so being honest is the fastest way out.
>”I should’ve explained it to you before going in, that’s my fault. There’s a number of them, it’s easy to get lost. May I come in and explain them?” She puts her hands together, patiently awaiting your answer.
>The door already being a quarter open, and you holding two towels and a stack of pajamas you decide to just nod, opening the door the rest of the way with your foot.
>She explains the organization, though being quite frank on, ‘You really only need these.’ she taps three easy to identify containers.
>”Your room is three doors down on the right when you’re done. I have to go attend to my juniors, so if I do not see you, sleep well.” She pleasantly smiles and floats out of the room, closing the doors behind her.
>Like she said, you don’t see her after you’re finished washing. Though she did seem to come by and take the basket of your clothes away.
>The pajamas fit quite well, they’re very soft and cozy. Quickly making your way down to the bedroom before you fall asleep, the room has white painted wood paneling, and a lighter green wallpaper.
>It doesn’t take long after getting into bed for you to fall fast asleep.
Lycaon
>The cool, damp wind ruffled his fur as the man strolled through the streets, only accompanied by the whistling of the wind through the streets.
>He could smell rain on the wind, less than thrilled at dealing with the mess it’d make of his fur he opened up an umbrella he had at his side, stepping out of a back alley.
>His time today was spent with one of the proxies, from the sound of it he expected a difficult commission. But it ended up being a long day of exploring New Eridu, and trying food.
>He reminisced on the still fresh memories, it was quite enjoyable to see the proxy so happy, and the food they tried may have been more to his preference than he let on.
>Strolling down the street, now lightly misting with rain he heard some noise, small clicking of metal on stone, and stiff fabric rustling amidst the quiet scene.
>Nobody was around, and the sound came from just a bit ahead, but he couldn’t tell where since he was in his own head. He paused his thoughts, scanning the surroundings as he continued on.
>The rain followed him, getting just a little heavier with every few steps he took. It didn’t take long to find the source of the noise,
>He looked into a small alcove, just big enough to fit their laying body.
-
>You kept rustling, unable to settle yourself, even with your fatigue you couldn’t even nap.
>You don’t know how long it’s been since you laid down, but you do know that you’re cold, and tired. So when you heard some footsteps approaching you, you just decided to ignore it.
>”Hello, do you need assistance?”
>You debate getting up and responding.
>”Excuse me, I’m sorry to disturb you, but are you alright?” The voice is closer.
>You roll to your back and sit up, seeing a large wolf thiren at your feet leaning over slightly.
>You instinctively pull away, causing the man to also take a step back. “What do you want?” You slowly unfurl confused and prop yourself up on the wall.
>”I saw you uncomfortably moving around, and wanted to check that you were ok. You are sleeping outside.” He kneels down by your feet, gesturing around the small space.
>”T-thank you, I’m…” You hesitate, unsure how to respond you just trail off, not meeting his gaze.
> He ponders, closing his eye as he thinks through something, then finally speaking, “May I have your name? I am Lycaon from Victoria Housekeeping.”
>”Mm, understood, nice to meet you Lycaon, I’m y/n.” You’re still unsure how to respond, his professional demeanor puts you off.
>”It’s very nice to meet you as well y/n, could I offer you some assistance?” He softens his face with a smile as well as both literally and metaphorically offering his hand.
>Your face almost involuntarily scrunches up in suspicion, “Wh-y would you wan to do that? Not like you’d have any reason to care.” Your gaze is pointed, if muddled with confusion.
>He doesn’t shift much, but from the slight movement of his mouth and ears, you can tell he gives a slight chuckle, “You are just like me when I was around your age. Suspicious of peoples intentions, concerned about protecting yourself, I know that feeling all too well.” He does look away at the end, seemingly remembering something.
>You look at him, slowly lowering your guard, you’re willing to listen a little more. He’s not being forceful and has read you quite well, so you release some of the tension in your body, motioning for him to continue.
>”Thank you for trusting me, I have been in situations such as yours many times through my life. It’s only because of a great mentor and the chance to join my current employer that I was able to start living comfortably.” He sits down fully as he speaks, clearly keeping details to himself, though being quite forthcoming about his past.
>”I-Is that why you want to help me? Because of your past?” You try and make sense of everything, though thinking deeply isn’t easy with fatigue fighting your remaining energy.
>He ponders for a moment, tilting his head this way and that. Once done he tries to explain, “I believe it’s not because of my past that I want to help you. It’s more where I am now, I am influenced more to make good on my past. So I would say it’s more accurate to say it’s because of my present that I want to help. That’s how I see it anyway.” He stumbles over his words, having trouble expressing his thoughts properly.
>Feeling yourself drifting in and out of focus, you shake your head as if to clear it’s fog. “Hm, I- don’t know if I can understand, I am getting so tired.” You grip your head, feeling your body pulse awkwardly with warmth.
>”Oh that’s not good, there’s some people I know close to here that could house you for tonight. I would need to get a few things organized before I could give you a place, but only likely a day or two at most.” He leans forward, as if to catch you if you fall over.
>The world seems to blink in and out as you listen, but getting the gist of what he said you manage to conformation as you try and stand.
>Your legs feel weak and your knees buckle a little, but in a moment Lycaon grabbed you and supporting your weight.
>”You must be very careful y/n, you’re clearly exhausted, let me carry you.” He helps you back to your feet, straightening out a few wrinkles.
>Leaning against the wall, you lightly stretch trying to get blood flowing. It’s not great, but you feel like you’ll be able to fend off falling again.
>With as much confidence as one with overwhelming fatigue can muster, you answer Lycaon, “No- no-… I’ll be fine. I can walk, see?” You bob side to side, towards the edge of the rain, now coming down steadily in heavy drops.
>He watches, walking just a step behind ready to catch you.
>But you take one more step than he thought, spreading your arms just above your sides you’re wrapped almost instantly in rain, cold water soaking hair, seeping through your shoes, and weighing down your jacket.
>Lycaon immediately rushes, opening the umbrella as he covers you both with the umbrella and his large frame.
>You were woken up by just stepping into the rain, but being wrapped and covered by a large wall of fur manages to make both make you more awake, and more sleepy.
>He slowly pulls back, ensuring the rain is blocked by the umbrella, “You should be more careful, you could get sick if you don’t dry off soon.” He looks seemingly past you, as he thinks.
>Continuing after a short pause, “No matter, we should make haste for some proper cover from the elements. I will contact a few people and set up everything for tonight as we go, does that sound good?” He brushes some wet hair out of your eyes.
>You look at him, realizing he has your bag in his hand looking comically small to him. “Yeah, we should get going.” Your body now feeling the chill of the rain and wind working against your skin.
>You walk with him to a nearby club he seems familiar with, as the bouncer at the door just motions for you two to enter.
>Catching up to his side after passing through the threshold, you are hit by many smells and music that sounds more like noise than anything you could distinguish.
>”Sorry, this is one of the only places open this time I could think of around here. Let’s go into the VIP lounge, it’ll be quiet and easier for you to recover.” He gestures to your side, across the floor to a hallway leading out of sight.
>You walk around the edge of the main dance floor, a second floor overlooking it on thin pillars.
>The floor is bustling, but clearly not as many people are here as normal with the bare spots in the crowd.
>Following down the hall, the noise of music fades and when you walk through a door to some stairs it nearly disappears.
>It’s only one flight of stairs to the second floor, but you are fighting with each step. But once through the door, the music comes back sightly clearer.
>You’re in an intersection, one hallway ahead, one to the balcony you saw below. Lycaon leads you forward and into one of the rooms.
>The room is almost dead quiet, the walls a warm grey, a long sofa on the back wall with soft red cushions. In front a stylish black stained table.
>You take a step, but Lycaon taps your shoulder, “If you may please give me your coat?” As he holds out his large hand to you.
> You slip off your damp jacket, handing it over to him, revealing a messy and thin long sleeve shirt, you see his ears and tail flick in response and his eye stays on you as you sit on the couch, sinking deep into the soft fabric.
>But you don’t take long after sitting down to fall asleep leaning back. Your body aches so it’s still light rest, but you enjoy the dreamless rest until a gentle hand rustles your shoulder.
>You found yourself with a twitchy body from the odd position you slept in and how short your rest seemed to be.
>”I have made all arrangements, are you ready to go?” You see Lycaon kneeling in front of you, looking up to meet your waking gaze.
>You stir easily, surprised to see him so close, “Mm? Y-eah, I should, be. Wha?” You see that you had a new, albeit somewhat cheep blue raincoat over top of you.
>”While you rested, I took the liberty of checking out some places for supplies and saw this coat, which I thought you’d be able to use, if only for now.” He stands grabbing a plastic bag from the table with something large and heavy bulging the edges smooth, as well as two others filled with some assorted obscured items, then standing by the door.
>Standing up, your knees feel the ache first, followed by the rest of your body stiffening like a plank.
>Stretching causes your vision to go in and out for a minute as you feel your blood rush around.
>”Good to see that you were able to rest well y/n, hopefully the rest of tonight will be much better. I contacted some managers for a store not far from here to pick us up.” He patiently waits for you to make your way to the door before opening it.
>Putting on the new raincoat, you see your last jacket is in one of Lycaon’s bags as you make your way around and out of the club, which is nearing closure.
>Once leaving into the dark night and steady rain, you see not far from the exit is a car parked, internal light on.
>Lycaon immediately leads you towards the car, where you meet a young woman, with blue hair who immedately opens the door upon seeing you two, with an umbrella in hand.
>”Let’s get you two inside, it’s raining buckets all night, and I don’t want to hear from Akira about the seats being soaked again.” She looks up namely at Lycaon.
>”Yes, let us, again thank you p-,*ahem* manager for accepting my request at such a late hour.” You see him clear his throat, motioning for you all to get into the car.
>”No worries, this is the infamous y/n you mentioned? The one you said was-” The manager’s sly catlike mouth was quieted by Lycaon interrupting as he sat down in the back of the car.
>”That’s information that’s to be kept between us dear manager. Remember I am asking for help with this like all official commissions.” He again, clears his throat.
>”I know, I know, you don’t want your big stoic guy persona to be tarnished.” She jabs back, giving you a mischievous look as she say’s so.
>There’s some mild banter back and forth, the woman introduces herself as Rin, and it doesn’t take long for you to tell she loves causing a bit of trouble.
>Eventually though, you make it to the video store, meeting a very sleepy man in the back Rin introduces as her brother and the Akira she warned of lectures from.
>He just stayed to greet you, but quickly excused himself to go sleep. Rin though, seemed to have stolen whatever energy he was supposed to have as she quickly bounded upstairs, coming back with a couple of blankets and a pillow for the off yellow couch.
>Lycaon bid you all farewell, taking the remaining manager aside as you take off excess layers, and lay out the blankets and pillow on the couch feeling awkward not doing anything.
>Once their conversation is over, Rin walks over to check on you, “How are you? I don’t want to keep you up too late, but thought it’d be rude to not talk to you at all.”
>Taking a seat on the now very airy blankets you think how to respond, “I-I don’t know, it’s nice, but why now of all times? It just feels so odd that only now I have found someone to help me.”
>”Lycaon is well,” She ponders her words, “a very complicated person, but very simple too. Complicated past, but simple present? He’s just a good guy, he isn’t ‘just some random guy’. Though I guess to you he is.” She trails off, giving an awkward little laugh.
>”I could tell, it just feels weird to now have people who want to help me. I don’t get it.” You give a sigh, the tiredness catching up once again making your eyelids start to feel heavy.
>”Maybe you don’t have to? Some people, like Lycaon are just, different, and that difference isn’t common. Maybe it’s just that, the chance is small for you to find someone like him.” She you over, “Maybe I should let you sleep, we can talk more in the morning, ok? You’ll be fine now that Lycaon wants to help you.”
>Bidding you farewell, you are left with your thoughts, the dark room, and a very comfy makeshift bed.
>Slipping into the covers, you fall into a deep, comforting dream in mere seconds of laying your head on the pillow.
