and you know, i did actually enjoy and even prefer many of the changes made to the Decagon House manga compared to the novel (mostly the cause of Chiori's death, which i'll make its own post about eventually because i have thoughts...)
... however, i don't really like that they made Ellery smarter? i feel like part of what made his character interesting and unique in the novel is that he ACTED like some typical mysterious, genius fella. but that trope was subverted because he was ultimately WRONG the entire time. he kept clinging to his theory that a dead man was the one killing them off, because he's extremely imaginative. Ellery is not a good detective, he likes PRETENDING to be one. in actuality, he's rather realistically flawed. he is reckless and impulsive, as well as stubborn enough to stick to his incorrect conclusion. Ellery ultimately didn't solve shit!!
yet, in the manga, they had him figure out the killer's identity. and while that choice made for a perhaps fun moment of confrontation that we didn't get originally, i feel like it simultaneously took away much of the tragedy. in the novel, Ellery is killed before he can solve the case. he doesn't get that moment to shine. he's fooled by the murderer and dies anticlimactically. it emphasised that he was just a regular person. a normal, young university student. he wasn't some prodigy detective in the making. he wasn't calculating, he wasn't logical (PLENTY of times), and he wasn't one step ahead. in fact, he fell down the fucking staircase. literally!! he didn't get to be like the protagonists in the genre he's so passionate about. he was the very last victim, but a victim exactly like all the others nonetheless. and just to rub salt in the wound, it was HIM that was framed for the whole thing. he won't be remembered for trying to play the detective's role. but for allegedly being the deranged murderer that killed all his friends and himself. and that is what makes his fate that much more miserable.
