Genevieve was in a bit of a pickle, per se. After returning from Easthampton Park, she came to the chilling realization that perhaps looking the part of a princess was exactly why it was too easy to spot her as one. She needed an entirely new look. Something that was simpler than the custom-made gowns she donned daily. If she could look a bit more common, perhaps Edgar was less likely to find out about her status, and Frederic would not make it so obvious that he knew she wasn’t just a French woman seeking out his brother.
But she needed a companion for this, someone who could help. And then…an idea formed. She hurried her way out of her chambers and down the long halls, turning sharp corners until she gasped.
“Monsieur Elliot! Are you…indisposed?” She twirled a curl around her finger, gnawing the inside of her cheek. “If not, I wanted to know if you would accompany me to visit the shops. I am, er, in need of…a gown.” The irony of it was that Genevieve was not inclined to spend money nor time shopping for dresses and jewels, it did not interest her. But she cared more about fitting in than ruining any chance of normalcy between her and Edgar. She didn’t want to lose him, and she needed a friend to help should she be successful. Elliot was perfect.
