Declan hadn’t intended to sit opposite the other boy in the corner, who was slumped in his chair and staring out the window. it was just that... This is where Declan sat, by the window with his sketchbook drawing and hoping no one would talk to him. There wasn’t usually someone else here, now there was and he wasn’t sure what to do about that. He settled for sitting down opposite him and getting his sketchbook out, he wanted to draw but his paranoia told him that the boy was staring and judging him. That’s when he decided to try what the doctors and nurses here always told him to try - Declan was going to try actually talking to another patient.
“Uh, I- I’m Dec-Declan,” he stammered forcing a weak smile. “I haven’t- haven’t seen you a-around here b-before.” That was how you greeted people, wasn’t it? That’s what he saw on television anyway. His bright green eyes flitted to the other boy’s face and away again as his chest began to heave a little. Interacting with people was far too stressful.
