Oh geez now I have to actually think up some answers! You’re gonna discover how terrible I am at making decisions because I bet I won’t be able to pick for most of these!
Absolute standout favourite antagonist of all time is Pyramid Head:
Silent Hill 2 is my all-time favourite horror game and PH made me shit so many bricks I could have built a house from the results. I mean, geez. Just look at him. This single-minded, not-quite-human, filthy, menacing, brutal distributor of Silent Hill’s sadistic punishment graced many a nightmare in my younger years. It was sad to see him get turned into an all-purpose generic scare tactic in post-Team Silent games though. Since he was such a personal projection of James in SH2, his very personal stalking of you throughout the game made him that much more terrifying.
Honourable mentions go to:
Kuja from Final Fantasy IX: Sassy, gorgeous, loves theatre, fantastic fashion taste, major jealousy complex and inferiority issues. I have always loved this pretty little douchebag.
GLaDOS from Portal: Any villain list she doesn’t make it onto is not a legit villain list, and that is a fact.
Daniella from Haunting Ground/Demento: One of the numerous creepy characters who chase you around this game, Daniella is completely standout with her character design, her fear of mirrors, the way she veers from robotic monotone to shrill insane laughter, and HIDING IN WARDROBES TO JUMP OUT AT YOU GODDAMN IT DANIELLA.
Gotta be Valkyria Chronicles. It is so charming, original and so much fun to play, but it was a PS3 exclusive and undermarketed, so didn’t do terribly well. The sequels got relegated to portable gaming devices. It’s very animu but has a pretty compelling story and memorable characters., even if the way the storytelling is done (lots of talking heads) isn’t all that exciting.
Y:What game would you want your child to play first?
Hm, even if it weren’t unlikely that I’ll ever have one xD this is a toughie. Branch outside of triple-A games and there’s a lot of genre diversity out there, but I don’t think you can go wrong for kids to start with platformy, explory, light-hearted adventures. So probably something like Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. The sequels are darker but the first game is a cheerful and entertaining delight. Just what a growing child needs!
