Mars had been out for a nightly walk with Maria Elena in her stroller because he read online that taking your baby for a walk outside at night would help them sleep, something out the dark triggering melatonin and helping them to get on the same schedule as you. He wasn’t sure how right it was but he wasn’t sure how right any of the advice was in the various parenting books he’d picked up and only trial and error were going to help him determine what worked and what didn’t but it was while out that he heard a soft whisper. He’d turned his head and found no one beside him and his stomach wrenched. No, it was too soon. He’d only just gone to the pools last week, it was too soon to start hearing things again and so he thought maybe it was a trick of his own brain, exhaustion, lack of sleep, dehydration, a cumulation of all of the above and it couldn’t possibly be what he thought it was so he ignored it but his pace quickened.
Then he heard it again and his shoulders immediately jutted up as if somehow raising them up closer to his ears would stop the voice from whispering softly. “Stop it,” he whispered to the air around him, “This isn’t happening right now. Right, baguette, there’s nothing there. It’s nothing. Nothing at all,” he said to himself and his baby as if voicing it would somehow make it go away.
As he proceeded to walk faster, stroller wheels rolling rapidly against the sidewalk, he heard it again, this time able to make out a distinct word.
“No, this isn’t happening. Fuck, fuck, fuck,” a stream of profanities erupted from his lips as he picked up the pace, intent on getting back to his apartment as quickly as he could but then his eyes landed on the signage for The Den and opted instead to duck inside there. “Ry?” He asked as he nudged open the door and struggled briefly to get the stroller through the door but with a yank and a shove of the door he was able to get himself and Maria Elena inside. “Ryden? Where’s Ryden?” He asked around, looking breathless and glanced around the room for the familiar lumbering shape of his friend but not immediately seeing him and instead only saw a thin and petite looking woman.
