"Before we... before we began our courtship, what was the nature of your relationship with Ereinion?"
Elrond was taken aback by the question. From the moment he had married Celebrían, he had hoped the thoughts - the feelings - of the past would not come back to haunt him. There was so much sorrow, so much anguish he'd rather forget. For the most part Celebrían's love had been enough. The gaze of her gentle eyes, the touch of her hand, the presence of her fëa were enough to vanquish the darkness Elrond carried with him up to this very day. Thus it was no wonder he was rather reluctant to answer the question. Once the floodgates are opened, there is no stopping the wave of emotion that would destroy everything in its path.
He turned his face away, closed his eyes and took a deep breath to calm himself. "You know I don't-..." He huffed and paused. Elrond knew he could not avoid the question altogether. "I think...I think I loved him. But I do not know if it was more admiration and loyalty than true love - what we have. I was his herald and he was my king and I..." The lord's eyes fell on Vilya. "I did think - at the time - that I could never be happy if I was not by his side."
"...without you, I don't know where I'd be right now."
