"Young Seminarian close to washing out approached to attend Vatican Observatory Summer School, decides to go because he likes astronomy (and sci-fi nerd). Potential wash-out ends up learning that the Catholic Church has been aware of, and in contact with aliens for quite some time. He then becomes a part of this space program, teams up with a grizzled (Space) Swiss Guardsman, a Space Elf, and a Dirty Harry-esque Angel to explore a universe aliens, abducted Crusaders, and all manner of eldritch horrors." @rex-vandalorum 's idea.
